Pruning and green waste in a Canberra garden: what to check first

Big trees: check the ACT's tree protection rules

Before you add a large tree to your gardening list, check whether it is protected. Under the ACT’s tree protection laws (Urban Forest Act 2023), all trees on public land are protected, and so is a tree on private land that:

  • is 8 metres or taller;
  • has a canopy 8 metres or wider; or
  • has a trunk circumference of 1 metre or more, measured 1.4 metres above natural ground level.

Any work that may impact a protected tree, including pruning or removal, needs ACT Government permission first. That applies to a neighbour’s tree and trees on public land too. For a tree management plan, the ACT Government recommends a consulting arborist. Shrubs, hedges, lawns and garden beds are the everyday work of our gardeners.

Prunings, clippings and the green bin

The ACT Government’s optional green garden waste bin is collected fortnightly and takes grass clippings, weeds, prunings, leaves, flowers and small branches up to 45 cm long and under 10 cm across. Soil, treated timber and plastic bags stay out, and a full bin must weigh under 50 kg. If you’d like clippings left in your green bin, tell us when you ask for a quote.

For bigger loads, standard garden waste is free to drop off at the Mugga Lane Resource Management Centre and at Canberra Sand and Gravel on Parkwood Road, Belconnen; oversized branches attract a fee, and the Mitchell site charges for all garden waste.

We also garden in Gungahlin, Woden Valley, Weston Creek and Queanbeyan. For bulky waste and tips, see our Canberra cleaning page.

Gardening Tips and Tricks

Gardening in Canberra, Australia’s capital city located in the ACT (Australian Capital Territory), can be a rewarding experience for both novice and experienced gardeners. The region’s unique climate and soil conditions require specific gardening techniques to ensure successful plant growth. One key tip is to choose plants that are well-suited to the area’s cool winters and hot summers. Native Australian plants often thrive in Canberra’s climate, as they have adapted to these conditions over time. It is also essential to carefully plan your garden layout and choose appropriate planting times for each species, considering factors such as frost dates and average rainfall.

Another valuable trick is implementing effective water management strategies due to the region’s limited water resources. Utilizing mulch around plants helps retain moisture, reduce evaporation rates, suppress weed growth, and regulate soil temperature.

Regular pruning not only maintains a neat appearance but also encourages healthy growth by improving airflow and preventing disease or pest infestation. Additionally, incorporating organic matter into your soil through composting ensures nutrient-rich foundations for optimal plant development.

Lastly, staying informed about local pests prevalent within the Canberra region allows you to identify potential threats early on before significant damage occurs; this way you can take prompt action with targeted pest control methods if needed.

By following these tips and tricks tailored specifically for gardening enthusiasts in Canberra ACT will surely foster beautiful gardens thriving under challenging climatic conditions while minimizing environmental impact- making it an enjoyable endeavor indeed!

Sustainable Gardening Practices

Sustainable gardening practices are essential in today’s world where environmental concerns and the need for resource conservation have become increasingly significant. By adopting sustainable gardening techniques, individuals can contribute to a healthier planet while enhancing the beauty and productivity of their outdoor spaces.

One vital aspect of sustainable gardening involves conserving water. This can be achieved through several methods, such as using drip irrigation systems instead of sprinklers to minimize evaporation or collecting rainwater in barrels for later use. Additionally, choosing drought-tolerant plants that require minimal watering is a wise approach towards water conservation.

Another crucial practice is soil enrichment. Instead of relying heavily on chemical fertilizers, gardeners can adopt organic alternatives like compost or worm castings. These natural amendments increase nutrient levels in the soil while promoting microbial activity and improving its structure.

Furthermore, incorporating native plants into garden designs not only supports local biodiversity but also reduces maintenance requirements by providing suitable habitats for indigenous insects and wildlife species. Native plants have adapted over time to regional climates and soils, making them more resistant to pests and diseases without the need for excessive pesticide usage.

In addition to these principles, integrated pest management (IPM) strategies should be implemented effectively to reduce reliance on harmful chemicals that may damage ecosystems outside the garden boundary. IPM focuses on preventative measures such as proper plant selection, regular monitoring for early signs of pest infestation or disease outbreaks, mechanical controls (such as hand-picking pests), biological controls (like introducing beneficial insects), cultural practices (crop rotation), and targeted use of pesticides only when necessary.

By embracing sustainable gardening practices like water conservation techniques, enriching soils organically with compost/worm castings, utilizing native species selection, and implementing effective IPM strategies – individuals can create vibrant gardens that not only beautify surroundings but also serve as an example of responsible stewardship toward our environment.
