Cats, water and smoke: looking after a Gungahlin home

Cat containment in Gungahlin suburbs

Every cat in the ACT born after 1 July 2022 must be kept on its owner’s property. The ACT Government also lists declared cat containment suburbs, where cats of any age must be contained. In the Gungahlin district, the list includes Bonner, Crace, Forde, Jacka, Moncrieff, Taylor, Throsby and Gungahlin Town Centre east (City Services: Cat containment). An indoor cat sheds on carpets, rugs and couches, so plan time for pet hair before an inspection. The cat is contained. The fur, sadly, is not.

Renting with a pet

Under the ACT Government’s Renting Book, a landlord can’t ask for extra bond or more inspections because you have a pet. Where the agreement says you need consent, the landlord has 14 days to reply to your written request before consent is taken as given. The landlord can still set reasonable conditions about cleaning and maintenance. When you leave, you don’t have to use professional cleaners. The exception is carpets: you can be asked to have them professionally cleaned if your agreement says so and the landlord has evidence they were professionally cleaned at the start of your tenancy. Keep that evidence handy before you book carpet cleaning.

Water from Icon Water

Icon Water describes Canberra’s water as soft, at about 43 mg/L of calcium carbonate on average across its customers, not a Gungahlin-only reading (Icon Water). It explains that hard water is more likely to cause scaling and is harder to lather. With soft water, cloudy shower glass and taps usually come from soap and body-wash residue rather than heavy scale. Soap lathers easily in soft water, so using a little less product leaves less to rinse off.

Bushfire prone areas and ash on the sills

The ACT’s Bushfire Prone Area map covers urban areas next to forest and grassland, plus the whole rural area, and it is reviewed every year (Bushfire Prone Area Overview 2026 (on ACTmapi)). Check your own block on the map rather than relying on a summary. After smoky or windy days, a grey film can settle on window sills, flyscreens, door tracks and air-conditioner filters. Wipe it off with a damp cloth before it gets ground in. If you are booking a deep or end of lease clean, mention any smoke residue in your booking notes.

Moving day in Gungahlin: parking, skips and unwanted furniture

Gungahlin is in the area of the ACT Government. Here’s what it publishes about moving day.

  • The ACT Government doesn’t publish a moving-day parking permit, but parking on nature strips is prohibited, so plan where the truck will stop.
  • A skip or bin on a nature strip or other public land needs a public land permit, and the ACT Government lists shipping containers on roads or verges for moving house as not approved. Applications are assessed within 28 days of all documents being received, so apply early.
  • Reusable furniture can go to Goodies Junction, the reuse shops at the Mugga Lane and Mitchell resource management centres, which accept reusable items free.
