Water, contained cats and spring pollen: looking after a Belconnen home

Like the rest of Canberra, Belconnen gets its water from Icon Water, which describes Canberra’s water as soft, at about 43 mg/L of calcium carbonate on average (2021–22 data), and notes that it is hard water that is more likely to cause scaling (Icon Water: Water quality and your appliances). In practice, a cloudy shower screen or tap here is more often soap and product residue than thick limescale, and a squeegee after each shower keeps it in check. The same Icon Water page has a hardness conversion table for setting a dishwasher or washing machine.

Every ACT cat born after 1 July 2022 must be contained on its owner’s property, and Lawson, Macnamara and Strathnairn in the Belconnen district are declared cat containment areas, where the rule covers cats of any age (City Services: Cat containment). A cat that lives indoors sheds onto the same carpets, rugs and couches every day, so tell us about pets when you book a carpet clean before your final inspection.

Renting with a pet? The ACT Government says a landlord can ask that you seek permission before getting one and can set reasonable conditions, such as how many pets you keep. Refusing a pet needs approval from the ACT Civil and Administrative Tribunal, and a landlord can’t charge extra bond or insist on more inspections because you have a pet.

Pollen season in Belconnen homes

The ACT pollen season typically runs from September to December, with tree pollen common in September and October and grass pollen from October to December (ACT Government: Pollen levels and your health). The AirRater app shows pollen and smoke readings, and one of the ACT’s three air-quality monitoring stations is in Florey. Regular vacuuming and wiping sills and flat surfaces may help reduce dust and pollen indoors.

Did you know? Lawson is named after the poet and short story writer Henry Lawson, and its streets follow the theme “Henry Lawson’s Australia”, according to ACT Government place-name records.

Moving day in Belconnen: parking, skips and unwanted furniture

Belconnen is in the area of the ACT Government. Here’s what it publishes about moving day.

  • The ACT Government doesn’t publish a moving-day parking permit, but parking on nature strips is prohibited, so plan where the truck will stop.
  • A skip or bin on a nature strip or other public land needs a public land permit, and the ACT Government lists shipping containers on roads or verges for moving house as not approved. Applications are assessed within 28 days of all documents being received, so apply early.
  • Reusable furniture can go to Goodies Junction, the reuse shops at the Mugga Lane and Mitchell resource management centres, which accept reusable items free.
