Apartments in Kingston, houses in Red Hill: cleaning South Canberra homes

The district’s housing changes sharply from one suburb to the next. At the ABS 2021 Census, 2,980 of Kingston’s 3,293 occupied homes were flats or apartments, most of them in blocks of four to eight storeys, and Barton was much the same (857 of 943). In Red Hill, 800 of 1,011 occupied homes were separate houses, and houses were also the majority in Deakin, Narrabundah and Yarralumla.

That changes what a clean involves. In a unit, balcony doors, sliding tracks and a compact kitchen take most of the effort. In a house, every extra bedroom and bathroom adds time, so enter the real room count in the booking form and the price you see will match the job.

Bushfire prone edges and ash on sills

The ACT Government’s Bushfire Prone Area Overview 2026 (on ACTmapi) treats Canberra’s built-up areas next to forest and grassland as bushfire prone. On the 2026 map that takes in parts of Red Hill, Deakin, Narrabundah and Yarralumla. The map is reviewed every year, so check your own block rather than relying on a summary.

After a smoky spell, fine ash settles on window sills, sliding door tracks, flyscreens and air-conditioning vent covers. A deep clean is booked by the hour, so list those surfaces first and the cleaner will start there.

Water and appliance settings in South Canberra kitchens and bathrooms

Icon Water rates Canberra’s supply as soft, averaging about 43 mg/L of calcium carbonate on 2021–22 data, and publishes conversions for appliance manuals: about 2.4 German degrees (°d) or 4.3 French degrees (°f). If your dishwasher or coffee machine asks for a hardness setting, use those figures to set it.

Soft water lathers easily and is less likely to leave scale, so a cloudy film on a shower screen is less likely to be limescale; leftover soap and cleaning product can cause one too. Use a little less detergent and rinse well to keep glass and taps clearer between cleans.

Did you know? According to ACT place-name records, Yarralumla’s name comes from the local Aboriginal language and is believed to mean ‘echo’, and its streets are named after governors and botanists.

Moving day in South Canberra: parking, skips and unwanted furniture

South Canberra is in the area of the ACT Government. Here’s what it publishes about moving day.

  • The ACT Government doesn’t publish a moving-day parking permit, but parking on nature strips is prohibited, so plan where the truck will stop.
  • A skip or bin on a nature strip or other public land needs a public land permit, and the ACT Government lists shipping containers on roads or verges for moving house as not approved. Applications are assessed within 28 days of all documents being received, so apply early.
  • Reusable furniture can go to Goodies Junction, the reuse shops at the Mugga Lane and Mitchell resource management centres, which accept reusable items free.

Renting in South Canberra

At the 2021 Census, 40.6% of occupied homes in South Canberra were separate houses, 11.7% semi-detached, terrace or townhouses and 47.6% flats or apartments; 37.3% were rented.

With so many apartments, check whether your building asks you to book the lift or loading bay for moving day, and how keys, fobs and remotes are returned. Ask your building manager or owners corporation rather than assuming. When you know your moving and inspection dates, see end of lease cleaning in South Canberra and our guide to moving out and getting your bond back.
