Water and spring pollen: keeping a Geelong West home clean

Geelong West’s tap water comes from Barwon Water, which supplies greater Geelong from forested catchments on the upper Barwon and Moorabool rivers. On its water quality page, Barwon Water describes the water across its whole region as generally soft, with no scaling problems, and says dishwashers and washing machines don’t need water softeners. That’s a region-wide statement, not a test result for Geelong West.

For you, that means taps, sinks and shower screens mostly need regular wiping rather than a strong descaler. If marks have built up by moving day, our end of lease clean covers the shower, bath, tiles and screens.

Grass pollen season, October to December

The Better Health Channel says Victoria’s grass pollen season usually runs from 1 October to 31 December, and that springtime hay fever in south-east Australia is often triggered by grass pollen. Damp-dusting sills and vacuuming carpets more often over those months may help reduce dust and pollen indoors. Moving out in spring? Our end of lease clean wipes split-system air conditioners and cleans the filter.

Flats and pets in Geelong West: owners corporation rules, and the services to book

Some Geelong West homes are flats or apartments (see the renting figures on this page), and moving out of one can involve an owners corporation. Consumer Affairs Victoria lists what an owners corporation can make rules about, including moving furniture through common property and disposing of domestic waste there. Ask your building manager what applies, and where the shared bins are, before the truck and the cleaners arrive.

Pets follow the same pattern. Consumer Affairs Victoria says an owners corporation may have its own rules about pets in common areas such as gardens, driveways and foyers, and renters must follow them. A rental provider can’t ask for an extra bond as a “pet bond”. If a dog or cat has lived on the carpets, add carpet steam cleaning to your end of lease booking.

Moving day in Geelong West: parking, skips and unwanted furniture

Geelong West is in the area of the City of Greater Geelong. Here’s what it publishes about moving day.

  • The City doesn’t publish a removal-truck permit. Occupying a footpath, laneway or road needs a Street/Footpath Occupation Permit.
  • A skip on Council land needs a permit taken out by the bin hire company; on your own property, no permit is needed. A moving container on private property needs no permit, while one on City-managed land needs an application (nature strips only, keeping 1.5 m clear for pedestrians).
  • The City’s resource recovery centres take large items for re-use or recycling, and each site lists items available to buy.

In Victoria, it’s illegal to put e-waste in household rubbish, so take old electronics to an e-waste drop-off.
