Pets in North Canberra rentals and apartments: the rules and the clean-up
In the ACT, every cat born after 1 July 2022 must be kept on its owner’s premises, and in declared cat containment areas the rule applies to cats of any age. In North Canberra, The Fair at Watson is on that list (City Services: Cats). A cat that stays home 24 hours a day sheds its hair on your carpets, couches and rugs rather than outdoors.
The ACT Government’s Renting Book sets out the pet rules for tenants:
- If your agreement doesn’t require the landlord’s consent, you can keep a pet. If it does, a landlord can only refuse with ACAT’s approval.
- A landlord can attach reasonable conditions about the number of animals or the cleaning and maintenance of the property, but can’t ask for extra bond or extra inspections.
- In an apartment or townhouse complex, owners corporation rules apply too. Without a pet-friendly rule, you ask the owners corporation for consent, and if it doesn’t reply within 3 weeks it is taken to consent.
- You’re responsible for any damage your pet causes. You don’t have to use professional cleaners when you leave, except for carpets where your agreement requires it and the landlord has evidence they were professionally cleaned at the start.
Before the final inspection, check your agreement for any pet cleaning conditions, then vacuum along skirting boards and under beds, wash pet bedding, and leave the carpets until last so nothing is walked back in.
Water and leftover chemicals: finishing a North Canberra move-out
North Canberra’s tap water comes from Icon Water, which gives one hardness figure for its whole network rather than by suburb: about 43 mg/L of calcium carbonate on average (2021–22 data), which it defines as soft (Icon Water: Water quality and your appliances). It also converts that to 2.41 German degrees. Soft water lathers easily, so a dull film on shower glass is usually soap residue rather than limescale.
Packing up the laundry cupboard? City Services asks that paint, cleaning products, aerosols and other chemicals never go in household bins or down the drain. Small quantities of household hazardous waste can be dropped off free at the Mitchell and Mugga Lane resource management centres, up to 20 litres of any single liquid and up to 100 litres of paint in containers of 20 litres or less (City Services: Hazardous waste). For furniture, bulky waste bookings and tip hours, see bins, bulky waste and tips on this page.
Half-empty bottles of oven cleaner don’t need to come with you. We bring our own.

Moving day in North Canberra: parking, skips and unwanted furniture
North Canberra is in the area of the ACT Government. Here’s what it publishes about moving day.
- The ACT Government doesn’t publish a moving-day parking permit, but parking on nature strips is prohibited, so plan where the truck will stop.
- A skip or bin on a nature strip or other public land needs a public land permit, and the ACT Government lists shipping containers on roads or verges for moving house as not approved. Applications are assessed within 28 days of all documents being received, so apply early.
- Reusable furniture can go to Goodies Junction, the reuse shops at the Mugga Lane and Mitchell resource management centres, which accept reusable items free.
Moving out? See end of lease cleaning prices in North Canberra. Hard rubbish, bin days and tips: see bins, bulky waste and tips in North Canberra.
