Water and pets: keeping a Corio home clean

What comes out of Corio's taps

On Barwon Water’s water-quality zone map, Corio sits in the Lovely Banks sampling locality. Barwon Water’s 2024–25 Annual Drinking Water Quality Report recorded total hardness there averaging 29 mg/L, between 15 and 69 mg/L across the year, well under the 200 mg/L aesthetic guideline. The utility describes water across its region as generally soft, with no scaling problems.

So chalky build-up is rarely the battle on Corio taps and shower screens. A squeegee after showers and a regular wipe with a mild detergent keep the glass clear without harsh descalers.

Seeing coloured water instead? Barwon Water says blue or green water can come from corroded copper house pipes, and orange or brown water from rusty iron pipes in older homes. Compare the kitchen tap with the garden tap: if the house pipes are the cause, that’s a job for a licensed plumber, not a cleaner.

Moving out of a Corio rental with pets

In Victoria, renters ask their rental provider before keeping a pet, using a pet request form for each animal, and every renter must keep the property reasonably clean and avoid damage, as Consumer Affairs Victoria explains. It also gives fleas left behind because a pet wasn’t treated as an example of a problem the renter may have to fix.

Plan the last few weeks around the animals: treat them for fleas early, vacuum hair from skirting boards, window tracks and under beds, and book carpet cleaning for the rooms they used most.

Condensation and the cleaning services in Corio

Mould grows best in damp, poorly ventilated spots. The Victorian Government’s Better Health Channel lists condensation from cooking, showering and clothes drying among the common causes, and suggests running exhaust fans or opening a window, wiping condensation off windows and shower glass, and venting the clothes dryer outside.

Renting? Consumer Affairs Victoria says a renter may be responsible for mould that formed because the bathroom fan wasn’t used, while the rental provider may be responsible when a problem with the property caused it. Tell your rental provider about leaks or damp as soon as you see them.

Moving day in Corio: parking, skips and unwanted furniture

Corio is in the area of the City of Greater Geelong. Here’s what it publishes about moving day.

  • The City doesn’t publish a removal-truck permit. Occupying a footpath, laneway or road needs a Street/Footpath Occupation Permit.
  • A skip on Council land needs a permit taken out by the bin hire company; on your own property, no permit is needed. A moving container on private property needs no permit, while one on City-managed land needs an application (nature strips only, keeping 1.5 m clear for pedestrians).
  • The City’s resource recovery centres take large items for re-use or recycling, and each site lists items available to buy.

In Victoria, it’s illegal to put e-waste in household rubbish, so take old electronics to an e-waste drop-off.
