Soft water, contained cats and a city of houses: cleaning in Canberra

Most Canberrans live in separate houses. At the ABS 2021 Census, 106,433 of the ACT’s 168,400 occupied private dwellings (about 63%) were separate houses, 28,921 (about 17%) were semi-detached homes, terraces or townhouses, and 32,669 (about 19%) were flats or apartments, more than half of those in blocks of four storeys or more. A house usually means more carpeted rooms and a bigger kitchen to plan around; an apartment adds lift and loading-dock bookings to the list.

Icon Water describes Canberra’s water as soft, at about 43 mg/L of calcium carbonate on average, and notes that hard water is the kind more likely to cause scaling (Icon Water: Water quality and your appliances). So the dull film on Canberra shower screens and taps is more often soap residue than heavy limescale, and regular wiping keeps it down between deep cleans.

All cats in the ACT born after 1 July 2022 must be contained on their owner’s property, and in declared cat containment suburbs the rule covers cats of any age (City Services: Cat containment). A cat that lives indoors leaves more hair on carpets, rugs and couches, which is worth planning for before an inspection.

Renting with a pet? The ACT Government’s Renting Book says a landlord can’t ask for extra bond because of a pet, but can set reasonable conditions about cleaning and maintenance. Tenants don’t have to use professional cleaners when they leave; the exception is carpets, where the agreement requires it and the landlord has evidence they were professionally cleaned at the start of the tenancy.

Moving in a hired car or passenger van? Access Canberra says a vehicle that isn’t a goods-carrying vehicle needs a permit to park in a loading zone, and goods vehicles may park there only while loading or unloading. For bulky waste and tips, see bins and waste on this page.

In apartment and townhouse complexes with shared bins, bin requests go through the building manager.
