According to the ABS 2021 Census, Highton had 7,458 occupied private dwellings: 6,508 separate houses, 922 semi-detached, terrace or townhouses and just 18 flats or apartments. Of those homes, 1,593 were rented, and 1,191 of the rentals were managed through a real estate agent.

Townhouses make up a larger share of the rental market than of homes overall: 507 of the rented dwellings were semi-detached, terrace or townhouses, close to a third of all rentals. Most of Highton’s townhouse-type homes (718 of 922) were recorded as one storey.

Leaving a separate house

• The garage is on the checklist: it’s swept and cobwebs are removed, which is often the room tenants forget until the last box is out.
• Split-system air conditioners are wiped and their filters cleaned. Ducted systems aren’t part of the standard clean.
• Window frame tracks are cleaned inside in every bedroom; outside windows, gardens and lawns aren’t included, so check your condition report for what the agent expects outdoors and allow time for it yourself.

Leaving a townhouse or semi-detached home

• Smaller homes still get the full checklist: oven interior and glass, range hood filters, shower screens, vanity cupboards inside and out, and skirting boards.
• Your price follows your bedrooms and bathrooms, so a two-bedroom townhouse isn’t priced like a four-bedroom house.
• If the home is behind a shared driveway or uses a lockbox, add the access details to your booking so the cleaners can get in without a call on moving day.

The City of Greater Geelong gives eligible residential properties two hard waste and two mattress collections each financial year, booked separately. Two of its rules catch people who are moving out: you must live at the property for the whole Monday to Friday collection week, and if a previous owner or tenant has already used both bookings this financial year, the next one has to wait until the new financial year. Check your dates early, before you lock in the clean.

What the council asks for a hard waste pick-up

• Items go out by the Sunday night before your collection week, as one pile on flat ground within 5 metres of the front boundary, not in a carport, on a verandah or next to the house. Rear units can’t be collected.
• The pile can be up to three cubic metres (3 m long, 1 m high, 1 m wide), and each item must be liftable by two people.
• Fridges and freezers must be emptied, with doors taped or removed. Up to four rolled rugs or carpets, each up to 1.5 m, are accepted.
• Green waste, bags of household rubbish, building materials, gas bottles and paint tins with paint in them aren’t accepted.
• Each mattress collection takes up to two mattresses.

Packing leaves plenty of cardboard. The interim Geelong Resource Recovery Centre at 21 Slevin Street, North Geelong, opens 8am to 4:15pm seven days a week (closed Christmas Day, New Year’s Day and Good Friday) and takes clean, flattened cardboard up to half a cubic metre, small electricals and TVs, and gas BBQ bottles up to 9 kg free for Greater Geelong residents. Clear the rubbish before the cleaners arrive: empty rooms and cupboards let them finish every item on the checklist, from wardrobe shelves to the garage floor.
