Bins, bulky waste and tips in Lara

Useful if you are moving in or out. Collection days, hard waste rules and tip fees are set by the council or government service responsible for your address, so use their official links below.

City of Greater Geelong

The City of Greater Geelong runs household bins, hard waste and mattress collections and its resource recovery centres.

  • Council (general enquiries and bins) 03 5272 5272
  • Hard waste service provider (booking enquiries and cancellations, weekdays 8.30 am to 5 pm) 03 5272 5444

Check your bin collection day Find your collection dates by address in the council’s bin collection calendar.

Most households have a red-lid rubbish bin (weekly), a yellow-lid recycling bin and a green-lid garden organics bin (fortnightly; garden waste only, no food yet).

Hard waste and mattress collections

  • Who: residential properties that pay the full waste charge (not commercial properties or vacant land); the person booking must live at the property for the collection week.
  • How much: two hard waste and two mattress collections per property each financial year, at no added cost for eligible residents. Each hard waste pile can be up to 3 cubic metres (3 m long, 1 m high, 1 m wide); timber, metal and glass no longer than 1.5 m.
  • Not collected: batteries, building and renovation materials, tyres, gas bottles, chemicals and asbestos, general rubbish and recycling, green waste, liquids including paint, and solar panels. Full list.
  • Timing: you book a collection week, subject to available slots. Items go out by the Sunday night before; collection can happen any time from 6 am Monday to 5 pm Friday. Cancel by the Thursday before, or the booking counts as used.
  • Units and flats: collections can’t be made from rear units; items must be within 5 metres of the front boundary, and nature strip approval may be needed.
  • Book: online booking form (hard waste and mattresses are separate bookings).

Moving day in Lara: parking, skips and unwanted furniture

Lara is in the area of the City of Greater Geelong. Here’s what it publishes about moving day.

  • The City doesn’t publish a removal-truck permit. Occupying a footpath, laneway or road needs a Street/Footpath Occupation Permit.
  • A skip on Council land needs a permit taken out by the bin hire company; on your own property, no permit is needed. A moving container on private property needs no permit, while one on City-managed land needs an application (nature strips only, keeping 1.5 m clear for pedestrians).
  • The City’s resource recovery centres take large items for re-use or recycling, and each site lists items available to buy.

In Victoria, it’s illegal to put e-waste in household rubbish, so take old electronics to an e-waste drop-off.
