Booking a removal truck, skip bin or storage pod? Some Melbourne councils issue a permit for moving day, many only regulate skips and containers, and a few don’t publish anything specific. This guide sets out what each council we cover actually publishes, so you can plan the truck, the skip and the timing.
Council pages checked 14 October 2026 (Darebin’s permit policy re-checked 15 October 2026). Fees change each financial year, so check the council page before you apply.
Quick answer: only a few Melbourne councils publish a permit that clearly covers a removal truck on moving day: the City of Melbourne, Port Phillip and Yarra, plus service permits in Merri-bek and Darebin that a removalist can use in timed-parking streets. Most councils regulate skip bins and storage containers instead, usually through the skip company, with anywhere from 2 days’ to 2 weeks’ notice. Check your council below, then book your end of lease clean for after the furniture is out.

Councils with a moving-day permit
Three councils publish a permit that clearly covers a removal truck: the City of Melbourne (reserved parking permits that cover removalists), the City of Port Phillip (a free temporary resident relocation permit) and Yarra City Council (a parking bay occupation permit for moving house). In streets with timed parking, Merri-bek’s service permit covers removalists, and so does Darebin’s for residents within 100 m of timed or permit zones; in both, a removalist can apply with your written consent.
Glen Eira’s occupation permit covers reserving parking spaces, and Whitehorse’s service permit gives residents on restricted streets a short exemption from timed parking. Everywhere else, check the size of the truck: in Frankston and Hume, large vehicles are limited to an hour on a built-up street.

Permit questions
Do I need a permit for a removal truck in Melbourne?
It depends on the council and the street. The City of Melbourne, Port Phillip and Yarra publish moving-day permits, and Merri-bek and Darebin service permits cover removalists in timed-parking streets. Most other councils don’t publish one, so check the parking signs and the truck’s size: in Frankston and Hume, large vehicles are limited to an hour in built-up areas (see each council for the size limits).
How much notice does council need for a skip bin on the road?
From 2 days (Monash) to 10 days (Brimbank), and Wyndham says permits are processed within 15 days. In most councils the skip company applies for you, so book the skip early.
Do I need a permit for a skip in my own driveway?
Usually not. Banyule, Glen Eira, Monash and Wyndham say no permit is needed for a skip on your own driveway or private land.
Can I put a storage pod or shipping container on the street?
Often not. Bayside, Greater Dandenong and Moonee Valley don’t allow them on Council land or roads, and Kingston, Yarra, Whittlesea and Wyndham need a permit (Whittlesea allows no more than 48 hours).
When should I book the end of lease clean?
For after the truck has gone and the rooms are empty, so the cleaners can reach everything. See end of lease cleaning in Melbourne for prices and booking.
