Cat curfews, damp bathrooms and the green bin: moving out in Fairfield

Whichever council collects your bins, the cat rule is the same at night. Darebin’s cat curfew runs from 7pm to 7am every day of the year, and Yarra requires cats to stay within their property between 7pm and 7am. Cats keep the curfew; their fur keeps its own hours. Before the inspection, add carpet steam cleaning and tell us about pets in the booking notes.

Clearing out the litter tray and the fridge? On the Darebin side, the food and green waste bin doesn’t take cat litter, even if it’s labelled compostable, or pet droppings. Food scraps go in loose, without bags or caddy liners, though a few sheets of paper towel or newspaper are fine for wrapping. Liquids such as milk and cooking oil stay out too. Hard rubbish and the tip are covered in bins, bulky waste and tips on this page.

Mould before the final inspection

If you can see or smell mould, the Better Health Channel advises cleaning it up straight away, with good ventilation and protective clothing. Renters should run extractor fans and air the home regularly; if mould keeps coming back after that, raise it with the owner. Our end of lease bathroom clean includes mould removal, but not ceiling mould.

Bins, bulky waste and tips in Fairfield

Useful if you are moving in or out. Collection days, hard waste rules and tip fees are set by the council or government service responsible for your address, so use their official links below.

Fairfield is split between Darebin City Council and Yarra City Council. To find out which council collects from your street, use each council’s bin collection lookup below or the Victorian Government’s Know Your Council search, then follow that council’s details.

Darebin City Council

Darebin City Council runs household bins, booked hard waste collections and the Darebin Resource Recovery Centre.

  • Council customer service (general enquiries, bins and hard waste) 03 8470 8888

Check your bin collection day Find your collection day on the council’s map search or zone calendars.

Households have a red-lid general waste bin (weekly), a yellow-lid recycling bin including glass (fortnightly) and a green-lid food and garden (FOGO) bin (fortnightly, alternating with recycling).

Flats, units and apartments whose bins are collected by the council can book hard waste like houses; those with private waste collection are not eligible.

Booked hard waste collection

  • Who and how much: residential properties with the kerbside waste charge get one free booked collection of up to 2 cubic metres per financial year (the allowance belongs to the property, so a new occupant may find it already used).
  • Extra collections: $82.30 per 2 cubic metres, plus per-item charges (for example $29.80 per mattress, $33.20 per fridge).
  • Limits: items under 1.5 m that two people can lift, nothing over 30 kg; at most two mattresses or bases.
  • Not collected: asbestos, building and renovation material, rubble, soil and concrete, garden waste, gas bottles, chemicals, paint and liquids, car batteries, solar panels, water tanks, and household rubbish and recycling. Full list.
  • Waiting time: the council says your collection date could be 4 weeks after booking because of demand. Changes need 48 hours’ notice before your collection week.
  • Book: call 03 8470 8888, online or at a customer service centre.

Tips, transfer stations and drop-off

  • Darebin Resource Recovery Centre (tip), 30 Kurnai Avenue (off Henty Street), Reservoir. Hours: 8 am to 3 pm, seven days; closed public holidays. Fees apply for general waste, mattresses and fridges; domestic quantities, by car only; no asbestos or mixed building materials. The Recycled Goods Shop is on site. Centre details and fees

Planning a move-out

Darebin says a collection could be 4 weeks after booking, so book as soon as you know your moving date. Have items collected before your end of lease clean and key handover. If the collection would be too late, take items to the Darebin Resource Recovery Centre (fees apply) or arrange a rubbish removal service.

Yarra City Council

Yarra City Council runs household bins, booked hard rubbish collections and recycling drop-off centres.

  • Council (general enquiries and bins, weekdays 8 am to 5 pm) 03 9205 5555

Check your bin collection day Search your address for your collection days.

Households have a red-lid rubbish bin (weekly), a yellow-lid recycling bin (fortnightly), a lime-green-lid food and garden organics (FOGO) bin (weekly, same day as rubbish) and, since 6 July 2026, a purple-lid glass bin (every four weeks).

Hard rubbish collection

  • Who and how much: up to two free collections per household each calendar year (unused bookings don’t carry over). Not for commercial, industrial or unrated properties; apartments with private waste arrangements may not be eligible.
  • Limits: everything must fit within 2 cubic metres (2 m × 1 m × 1 m); no item longer than 2 m or heavier than 50 kg.
  • Not collected: garden waste, rubble, soil, building and renovation materials, hazardous materials such as chemicals and asbestos, business waste, and household rubbish and recycling. Full list.
  • Waiting time: the council says that, because of demand, the wait for a collection is several weeks. Put items out the night before, never more than 24 hours early.
  • Apartments and units: book through your building manager, property manager or owners committee if possible; crews collect from the footpath, not from bin rooms or car parks.
  • Book: online request or call 03 9205 5555.

Moving day in Fairfield: parking, skips and unwanted furniture

Fairfield is split between Darebin City Council and Yarra City Council. Check which council collects your bins, then follow that council’s rules below.

  • Darebin City Council: Darebin’s service parking permit is for residents within 100 m of timed or permit zones (up to 4 weeks), with proof of residence and of the work. Council’s parking permit policy lets a removalist apply with your written consent.
  • Darebin City Council: Skips on public roads or land need a permit (up to 7 days), and occupying Council land or a road needs a permit applied for at least 7 days ahead.
  • Darebin City Council: Council’s Recycled Goods Shop at the Darebin Resource Recovery Centre in Reservoir takes good-condition furniture.
  • Yarra City Council: Yarra’s parking bay occupation permit can be used for moving house, for vehicles up to 4.5 tonnes and 7.5 m long. Apply at least 5 business days ahead; it isn’t available in no-stopping, loading or short-term (under 1P) zones and doesn’t reserve a specific bay.
  • Yarra City Council: Shipping containers and storage pods need a separate road occupation permit, and skips on Council land need a permit from a registered skip company (usually issued within 24 hours).

In Victoria, it’s illegal to put e-waste in household rubbish, so take old electronics to an e-waste drop-off.
