Clearing out a Richmond rental: Yarra’s hard rubbish conditions
Got furniture, an old mattress or a broken appliance to get rid of before your end of lease clean? Check the conditions of Yarra City Council’s hard rubbish collection before you book it.
Who can book
- Collections aren’t available to commercial, industrial or unrated properties, and apartments with private waste arrangements may not be eligible.
- In an eligible apartment or unit, Yarra asks you to book through your building manager, property manager or owners’ committee if possible.
- Unused bookings can’t be carried over into the next calendar year. A collection booked for the following year counts towards that year’s collections.
- Attach a “booked collection” note to the items you’ve booked.
What fits in one collection
- Your collection must fit within 2 cubic metres (2 m x 1 m x 1 m), be no longer than 2 metres, be easily liftable by 2 people and weigh under 50 kg.
- Accepted items include mattresses (one king-size mattress per booking), e-waste (anything with a cord or battery), white goods, small furniture and couches, and hard plastic household items.
- Household rubbish and recycling and garden waste aren’t collected.
- Items are only collected from a laneway behind your property if your weekly rubbish and recycling bins are also collected from that laneway.

What’s included in an end of lease clean
Every end of lease clean follows our checklist, and your cleaners bring the products and equipment. In short:
- Kitchen: sink, benchtops, cupboards inside and out, stove, range hood and filters, and the dishwasher exterior.

Before your final inspection
In Victoria, renters must leave the property reasonably clean, with fair wear and tear excepted, and the condition report from the start of the agreement is the reference. Since 29 March 2021 a rental provider can only require professional cleaning at the end of the tenancy if the property was professionally cleaned immediately before you moved in and you were told, or if it is needed to return the property to its condition at the start, allowing for fair wear and tear.
