South Yarra is split between City of Stonnington and City of Melbourne. To find out which council collects from your street, use each council’s bin collection lookup below or the Victorian Government’s Know Your Council search, then follow that council’s details.

City of Stonnington

The City of Stonnington runs household bins, area-wide hard waste collections twice a year and the Stonnington Waste Transfer Station.

Households have general waste, recycling and food and garden organics (FOGO) collections; your dates are in the lookup.

Hard waste collections

  • Area-wide collections: two scheduled collections every year, in spring and autumn, by zone. You don’t book these: the council publishes the dates for your zone before each round. Put items out no more than 24 hours before your date.
  • Limits: each item under 20 kg and shorter than 1.5 m (except mattresses); everything together less than 5 cubic metres.
  • Not collected: unbundled green waste, renovation or building materials, gas bottles, tyres, household garbage and recyclables, hazardous materials and chemicals, car parts, asbestos, paint, fire extinguishers and batteries.
  • Outside the scheduled rounds: residents can pay for a booked collection; collections are generally on Fridays, booked by 11.59 pm Wednesday the week before. The price is shown when you book.
  • Large apartment buildings: contact your owners corporation to book a collection for you.

Tips, transfer stations and drop-off

  • Stonnington Waste Transfer Station (transfer station), 43 Weir Street, Malvern. Hours: Monday to Friday 10 am to 3.30 pm; Saturday 9 am to 3 pm; Sunday 10 am to 3 pm; closed New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Planning a move-out

If your move doesn’t line up with your zone’s scheduled collection, book a paid collection (by Wednesday night for that Friday) as soon as you know your moving date. Have items collected before your end of lease clean and key handover. The City of Melbourne runs household bins, hard waste collections and the Dynon Road Waste and Recycling Centre.

Households with council bins have a red-lid general waste bin (weekly), a yellow-lid recycling bin (fortnightly) and a lime-green-lid food and garden organics (FOGO) bin (weekly).

Most residents live in apartments, where bins may be in a bin room or use chutes: ask your building manager or owners corporation where the bins are and when they are collected.

Hard waste collection

  • Who and how much: one free collection of 1 cubic metre (1 m × 1 m × 1 m) per residential address each financial year. Commercial and retail addresses are not eligible.
  • Limits: no item over 30 kg; timber under 1 m (at most 10 pieces); rugs no more than 1.5 m.
  • Not collected: branches, building and renovation waste (including toilets and carpet), fencing, liquids, chemicals and paint, household rubbish and recycling, polystyrene, bricks and soil, asbestos and other hazardous waste, tyres and broken glass. Full list.
  • Booking notice: bookings are essential, and collection dates are released two months in advance. Put items out the day before.
  • High-rise buildings: ask your building manager to book a collection for you.
  • Book: online booking.

Tips, transfer stations and drop-off

  • Dynon Road Waste and Recycling Centre (transfer station), 437 Dynon Road, West Melbourne. Hours: for residents, 9 am to 3 pm, seven days. City of Melbourne residents can drop off recycling, green waste and e-waste free with proof of address (rates notice, driver’s licence or utility bill); tipping fees apply to household waste. Moving day in South Yarra: parking, skips and unwanted furniture

South Yarra is split between the City of Stonnington and the City of Melbourne. Check which council collects your bins, then follow that council’s rules below.

  • City of Stonnington: Stonnington doesn’t publish a moving-day parking permit; its works zone permits are for construction sites, not moves.
  • City of Stonnington: A skip bin on the street needs a permit for 1 to 30 days, applied for online.
  • City of Stonnington: The City suggests donating or selling first, through op shops, Buy Nothing groups or online, before booking hard waste.
  • City of Melbourne: The City of Melbourne’s reserved parking permits cover removalists when off-street parking isn’t suitable. Apply at least five clear business days ahead; residents get 50% off for a removalist outside their own home.
  • City of Melbourne: A skip on a public road needs a skip permit, which the skip company applies for. Reserved parking permits don’t cover skips.
  • City of Melbourne: The City asks residents to donate, give away or sell hard-waste items in good condition before booking a collection.

In Victoria, it’s illegal to put e-waste in household rubbish, so take old electronics to an e-waste drop-off.
