Bins, bulky waste and tips in Coburg

Useful if you are moving in or out. Collection days, hard waste rules and tip fees are set by the council or government service responsible for your address, so use their official links below.

Coburg is split between Merri-bek City Council and Darebin City Council. To find out which council collects from your street, use each council’s bin collection lookup below or the Victorian Government’s Know Your Council search, then follow that council’s details.

Merri-bek City Council

Merri-bek City Council runs household bins and booked hard waste collections. It does not run its own tip; it lists a private transfer station nearby.

  • Council (general enquiries and bins, 24 hours) 03 9240 1111
  • Hard waste bookings (WM Waste Management, the council’s contractor) 9721 1915

Check your bin collection day Search your address in the waste collection calendar.

Households have a red-lid general rubbish bin (weekly; some addresses are in a fortnightly trial), a yellow-lid recycling bin (fortnightly), a light-green-lid food and garden organics (FOGO) bin (weekly) and a purple-lid glass bin (every 4 weeks). Developments of four or more homes share some bins.

In multi-unit developments with council bins, each unit can book its own hard waste collection.

Booked hard waste collection

  • Who and how much: eligibility goes with the property (where the waste charge is paid and council bins are used), so tenants can book. Each financial year: two collections of up to 1 cubic metre, or one of 2 cubic metres.
  • Limits: items under 1.5 m that two people can lift; one mattress and bed base per household.
  • Not collected: asbestos, chemicals, fuels, building and renovation materials, tyres, batteries, paint and oil, gas bottles, commercial waste, and household rubbish or recycling. Full list.
  • Booking notice: the council asks you to plan ahead, as bookings can usually be made within a 2 to 4 week timeframe. Paid extra collections ($100 per cubic metre, $200 for 2) booked and paid before 3 pm Thursday are collected the following week.
  • Book: call WM on 9721 1915 or book online.

Tips, transfer stations and drop-off

  • East Brunswick Transfer Station (privately run), 32 Kirkdale Street, Brunswick East. Hours: weekdays 7 am to 3.45 pm; weekends 9 am to 12.45 pm. The council advises checking accepted items and charges with the operator (9389 5100). Operator

Recycling and small-item drop-off only (no household rubbish)

  • Council recycling stations (small items only), Merri-bek Civic Centre, 90 Bell Street, Coburg, and Brunswick Customer Service Centre, 233 Sydney Road, Brunswick. Hours: weekdays 8.30 am to 5 pm. Phones, batteries, light globes, CDs and DVDs, and similar small items. Recycling stations

Planning a move-out

Merri-bek says bookings can usually be made within a 2 to 4 week timeframe, so book as soon as you know your moving date. Have items collected before your end of lease clean and key handover. If the collection would be too late, take items to a transfer station (fees apply) or arrange a rubbish removal service.

Households have a red-lid general waste bin (weekly), a yellow-lid recycling bin including glass (fortnightly) and a green-lid food and garden (FOGO) bin (fortnightly, alternating with recycling).

Flats, units and apartments whose bins are collected by the council can book hard waste like houses; those with private waste collection are not eligible.

Booked hard waste collection

  • Who and how much: residential properties with the kerbside waste charge get one free booked collection of up to 2 cubic metres per financial year (the allowance belongs to the property, so a new occupant may find it already used).
  • Extra collections: $82.30 per 2 cubic metres, plus per-item charges (for example $29.80 per mattress, $33.20 per fridge).
  • Limits: items under 1.5 m that two people can lift, nothing over 30 kg; at most two mattresses or bases.
  • Not collected: asbestos, building and renovation material, rubble, soil and concrete, garden waste, gas bottles, chemicals, paint and liquids, car batteries, solar panels, water tanks, and household rubbish and recycling. Full list.
  • Waiting time: the council says your collection date could be 4 weeks after booking because of demand. Changes need 48 hours’ notice before your collection week.
  • Book: call 03 8470 8888, online or at a customer service centre.

Tips, transfer stations and drop-off

  • Darebin Resource Recovery Centre (tip), 30 Kurnai Avenue (off Henty Street), Reservoir. Hours: 8 am to 3 pm, seven days; closed public holidays. Moving day in Coburg: parking, skips and unwanted furniture

Coburg is split between Merri-bek City Council and Darebin City Council. Check which council collects your bins, then follow that council’s rules below.

  • Merri-bek City Council: In streets with timed parking, removalists can use a Merri-bek service permit to park all day (up to 4 weeks). You can apply, or the removalist can with your written consent; attach proof of address and the removalist’s quote. It doesn’t allow parking in clearways, no-stopping or loading zones.
  • Merri-bek City Council: Skips need a permit arranged by an accredited hire company (7 days’ notice before each placement) and aren’t allowed on footpaths or nature strips. Shipping containers can’t be stored on roads or public land.
  • Merri-bek City Council: Council’s “Donate your goods” advice names the Brotherhood of St Laurence and St Vincent de Paul furniture collections, and reminds you not to leave donations outside closed charity shops.
  • Darebin City Council: Darebin’s service parking permit is for residents within 100 m of timed or permit zones (up to 4 weeks), with proof of residence and of the work. Council’s parking permit policy lets a removalist apply with your written consent.
  • Darebin City Council: Skips on public roads or land need a permit (up to 7 days), and occupying Council land or a road needs a permit applied for at least 7 days ahead.
  • Darebin City Council: Council’s Recycled Goods Shop at the Darebin Resource Recovery Centre in Reservoir takes good-condition furniture.

In Victoria, it’s illegal to put e-waste in household rubbish, so take old electronics to an e-waste drop-off.
