Tap water, pet hair and spring pollen: cleaning a Fawkner home

Fawkner’s tap water comes from Yarra Valley Water, which places the suburb in its Glenroy water sampling area. In the Yarra Valley Water 2025–26 Drinking Water Quality Report, hardness there averaged 17 mg/L across four quarterly samples, far below the guideline mean of 200 mg/L.

Hardness is the calcium and magnesium in water that can leave a hard, flaky scale. With so little of it here, the cloudy film on a Fawkner shower screen is more likely to be soap residue than heavy limescale, so a degreasing clean usually does more than a strong descaler. Kettles and tap aerators can still build up a little over the years, so check them before an inspection.

Keeping a pet in a Fawkner rental

In Victoria, renters ask their rental provider for permission with a pet request form, one for each pet. The provider has 14 days to agree in writing or apply to VCAT, and if they don’t respond in that time the renter can keep the pet. Consumer Affairs Victoria also reminds renters to keep the property reasonably clean and avoid damage, and pet damage counts.

At move-out, pet hair works deep into carpet pile and along skirting edges, and odour can linger in the carpet. Book the carpet clean for after the furniture has gone, so every room is done in one visit.

Spring pollen season in Fawkner

Victoria’s grass pollen season usually runs from 1 October to 31 December, and the Better Health Channel points to the Melbourne Pollen Count and Forecast for daily levels. A thorough clean of floors, sills and vents in those months may help reduce dust and pollen indoors.

Bins, bulky waste and tips in Fawkner

Useful if you are moving in or out. Collection days, hard waste rules and tip fees are set by the council or government service responsible for your address, so use their official links below.

Fawkner is split between Merri-bek City Council and Hume City Council. To find out which council collects from your street, use each council’s bin collection lookup below or the Victorian Government’s Know Your Council search, then follow that council’s details.

Merri-bek City Council

Merri-bek City Council runs household bins and booked hard waste collections. It does not run its own tip; it lists a private transfer station nearby.

  • Council (general enquiries and bins, 24 hours) 03 9240 1111
  • Hard waste bookings (WM Waste Management, the council’s contractor) 9721 1915

Check your bin collection day Search your address in the waste collection calendar.

Households have a red-lid general rubbish bin (weekly; some addresses are in a fortnightly trial), a yellow-lid recycling bin (fortnightly), a light-green-lid food and garden organics (FOGO) bin (weekly) and a purple-lid glass bin (every 4 weeks). Developments of four or more homes share some bins.

In multi-unit developments with council bins, each unit can book its own hard waste collection.

Booked hard waste collection

  • Who and how much: eligibility goes with the property (where the waste charge is paid and council bins are used), so tenants can book. Each financial year: two collections of up to 1 cubic metre, or one of 2 cubic metres.
  • Limits: items under 1.5 m that two people can lift; one mattress and bed base per household.
  • Not collected: asbestos, chemicals, fuels, building and renovation materials, tyres, batteries, paint and oil, gas bottles, commercial waste, and household rubbish or recycling. Full list.
  • Booking notice: the council asks you to plan ahead, as bookings can usually be made within a 2 to 4 week timeframe. Paid extra collections ($100 per cubic metre, $200 for 2) booked and paid before 3 pm Thursday are collected the following week.
  • Book: call WM on 9721 1915 or book online.

If the collection would be too late, take items to a transfer station (fees apply) or arrange a rubbish removal service.

Moving day in Fawkner: parking, skips and unwanted furniture

Fawkner is split between Merri-bek City Council and Hume City Council. Check which council collects your bins, then follow that council’s rules below.

  • Merri-bek City Council: In streets with timed parking, removalists can use a Merri-bek service permit to park all day (up to 4 weeks). You can apply, or the removalist can with your written consent; attach proof of address and the removalist’s quote. It doesn’t allow parking in clearways, no-stopping or loading zones.
  • Merri-bek City Council: Skips need a permit arranged by an accredited hire company (7 days’ notice before each placement) and aren’t allowed on footpaths or nature strips. Shipping containers can’t be stored on roads or public land.
  • Merri-bek City Council: Council’s “Donate your goods” advice names the Brotherhood of St Laurence and St Vincent de Paul furniture collections, and reminds you not to leave donations outside closed charity shops.
  • Hume City Council: Large vehicles (over 7.5 m or 4.5 t) can’t stay parked in a built-up area for more than an hour without a permit, so check the size of your removal truck.
  • Hume City Council: Skips on the road or nature strip need Council permission, applied for by the hire company.
  • Hume City Council: Council runs Recycled Goods Stores at its Sunbury and Campbellfield resource recovery centres, and suggests charity stores, online sales or a garage sale for good items.

In Victoria, it’s illegal to put e-waste in household rubbish, so take old electronics to an e-waste drop-off.
