Moving out of a Doncaster rental with a pet
Victorian renters can keep a pet with the rental provider’s written consent, asked for on Consumer Affairs Victoria’s pet request form. The provider has 14 days to decide or apply to VCAT, and can’t charge an extra pet bond (pets in rental properties, Consumer Affairs Victoria). When you leave, the usual duties still apply: take care to avoid damage and keep the property reasonably clean. For pet damage, VCAT considers fair wear and tear and the age and condition of the items.
Fleas are one of the examples Consumer Affairs Victoria gives of a pest problem a renter may be responsible for, where the pet wasn’t treated (pests, infestations and mould). Getting a pet-friendly home ready for the inspection
- Pack pet beds, bowls, scratching posts and litter trays with the furniture, so the cleaners can reach the floor and skirting boards where they stood.
- Hair and nose marks tend to gather on doors, skirting boards and low glass. All three are on our checklist, along with vacuuming and mopping every floor.
- Pet odour or stains in carpet? Carpet steam cleaning can go in the same booking if your lease or condition report calls for it.
- Clear pet droppings from the garden yourself; outdoor yard work is not part of the clean, though the garage gets a sweep.

Bathroom mould in Doncaster: what to expect at bond time
The Better Health Channel (Victorian Department of Health) says mould grows best in damp, poorly ventilated areas. Its tips are to use exhaust fans or open windows when showering, cooking or running the dishwasher, wipe condensation off windows and shower glass, and move furniture away from walls to let air circulate (mould and your health). In the last weeks of a lease, keeping the bathroom fan running is an easy way to avoid fresh spots before the inspection.
Who pays for mould depends on the cause. Consumer Affairs Victoria says a renter may be responsible if their behaviour contributed, such as not using the bathroom fan, and the rental provider may be responsible if a problem with the property caused it, such as a faulty window frame letting in rain. What’s included in an end of lease clean
Every end of lease clean follows our checklist, and your cleaners bring the products and equipment. In short:
- Kitchen: sink, benchtops, cupboards inside and out, stove, range hood and filters, and the dishwasher exterior.
- Oven: oven and grill cleaned inside, including the glass, grease and grime removed, and the front wiped down.
- Bathrooms: shower, bath, tiles and screens, vanity and cabinets inside and out, toilet, mirrors, exhaust fan (exterior), mould removal (not ceiling mould) and floors.
- Bedrooms and living areas: vacuuming and mopping, wardrobes, skirting boards, light switches and power points, wall marks, cobwebs (inside), ceiling fans, split-system air conditioners wiped with the filter cleaned, and window tracks (inside).
- Laundry: benchtops, sink and taps, floor and light fittings.
- Garage: swept and cobwebs removed.

Planning your end of lease clean in Doncaster
A few things make the clean and the final inspection go more smoothly:

In Victoria, renters must leave the property reasonably clean, with fair wear and tear excepted, and the condition report from the start of the agreement is the reference. Since 29 March 2021 a rental provider can only require professional cleaning at the end of the tenancy if the property was professionally cleaned immediately before you moved in and you were told, or if it is needed to return the property to its condition at the start, allowing for fair wear and tear.
