Apartment towers, one-bedders and pets: moving out of a Footscray home

A lot of Footscray’s apartments are in taller buildings. In the ABS 2021 Census, 2,176 of the suburb’s 3,856 occupied flats and apartments were in blocks of four storeys or more, including 1,018 in blocks of nine storeys or more. Most were compact: 1,282 had one bedroom and 2,061 had two. For a smaller apartment, our booking form works out the price from your bedrooms and bathrooms, so you only pay for the rooms you have.

In a high-rise, tell us the floor, how the cleaners get in (fob, intercom or concierge) and where they can park. Ask your building manager whether cleaners carrying equipment need to use a particular lift or entrance.

Pets in a Footscray rental

Consumer Affairs Victoria says owners corporation rules on pets in common areas must be followed, and rental providers can’t ask for a separate pet bond. Renters still have to keep the property reasonably clean and avoid damage, so pet hair, odour and stains on carpet are worth sorting out before the final inspection. If you’re arriving from another council area, Maribyrnong City Council says you still need to register your cat or dog with it; cats and dogs over three months old must be microchipped and registered.

Globes, batteries and old appliances: Footscray move-out leftovers, and cleaning services

Hard rubbish won’t take everything, and moving out often turns up spent light globes, batteries and broken electricals. Maribyrnong City Council says e-waste (anything with a battery or cord) can’t go in any bin. Light globes, including fluorescent ones, can go free to its Community Recycling Stations, which include West Footscray Library; these take small items only, during each site’s opening hours. Household batteries can be dropped off free at B-cycle points, and large appliances such as TVs, fridges and washing machines go to a transfer station. For bin days, hard rubbish and the nearest transfer stations, see bins, bulky waste and tips in Footscray.

Bins, bulky waste and tips in Footscray

Useful if you are moving in or out. Collection days, hard waste rules and tip fees are set by the council or government service responsible for your address, so use their official links below.

Maribyrnong City Council

Maribyrnong City Council runs household bins and hard rubbish collections. It does not run its own tip; it lists nearby transfer stations.

  • Council customer service (general enquiries, bins and hard rubbish) (03) 9688 0200

Check your bin collection day Find your zone on the council’s bin calendar map (also in the Maribyrnong Bins and Recycling app).

Households have a red-lid general rubbish bin and a yellow-lid recycling bin; houses and developments of up to four units also have a lime-green-lid food and garden organics bin, collected fortnightly on alternate weeks to recycling.

In complexes of more than 10 homes, hard rubbish goes through the owners corporation or building manager, not the online form.

Hard rubbish collection

  • Who and how much: one free collection per eligible household each calendar year: 2 cubic metres of hard waste (2 m × 1 m × 1 m), plus up to 4 cubic metres of bundled green waste. Extra collections cost $104.70.
  • Limits: at most 2 mattresses or bases; timber and metal up to 1.5 m.
  • Not collected: bricks, plaster, concrete and renovation materials, fluorescent tubes, paint and chemicals, polystyrene, tyres, gas bottles, general rubbish, batteries and glass. Full list.
  • Timing: a booking confirmation comes within three days of your request, and the collection date is sent by email or phone. Cancel by 2 pm on the Friday before.
  • Book: request form (help on (03) 9688 0200).

Tips, transfer stations and drop-off

Maribyrnong lists these transfer stations and advises contacting them before you visit:

  • Moonee Valley Transfer Station, 188 Holmes Road: run by another council or a private operator; check its opening hours, fees and accepted items with the council’s list before you go.
  • Brooklyn Resource Recovery Centre, 174 Old Geelong Road, Brooklyn: run by another council or a private operator; check its opening hours, fees and accepted items with the council’s list before you go.

Planning a move-out

Request your collection as soon as you know your moving date; confirmation can take up to three days. Have items collected before your end of lease clean and key handover. If the collection would be too late, take items to a transfer station (fees apply) or arrange a rubbish removal service.

Moving day in Footscray: parking, skips and unwanted furniture

Footscray is in the area of Maribyrnong City Council. Here’s what it publishes about moving day.

  • Occupying part of a road, footpath or nature strip needs a road occupation permit, applied for at least 10 business days ahead.
  • Skips on a road or council land need a permit from a registered skip company (five business days’ notice).
  • Council’s Repair and donate page names St Vincent de Paul and the Brotherhood of St Laurence for furniture, and Maribyrnong is part of Garage Sale Trail 2026 (7–8 and 14–15 November).

In Victoria, it’s illegal to put e-waste in household rubbish, so take old electronics to an e-waste drop-off.

Renting in Footscray

At the 2021 Census, 31.5% of occupied homes in Footscray were separate houses, 15.3% semi-detached, terrace or townhouses and 52.3% flats or apartments; 55.9% were rented.

With so many apartments, check whether your building asks you to book the lift or loading bay for moving day, and how keys, fobs and remotes are returned. Ask your building manager or owners corporation rather than assuming. When you know your moving and inspection dates, see end of lease cleaning in Footscray and our guide to moving out and getting your bond back.
