Maribyrnong City Council runs household bins and hard rubbish collections. It does not run its own tip; it lists nearby transfer stations.

Households have a red-lid general rubbish bin and a yellow-lid recycling bin; houses and developments of up to four units also have a lime-green-lid food and garden organics bin, collected fortnightly on alternate weeks to recycling.

In complexes of more than 10 homes, hard rubbish goes through the owners corporation or building manager, not the online form.

Hard rubbish collection

  • Who and how much: one free collection per eligible household each calendar year: 2 cubic metres of hard waste (2 m × 1 m × 1 m), plus up to 4 cubic metres of bundled green waste. Extra collections cost $104.70.
  • Limits: at most 2 mattresses or bases; timber and metal up to 1.5 m.
  • Not collected: bricks, plaster, concrete and renovation materials, fluorescent tubes, paint and chemicals, polystyrene, tyres, gas bottles, general rubbish, batteries and glass. Full list.
  • Timing: a booking confirmation comes within three days of your request, and the collection date is sent by email or phone. Cancel by 2 pm on the Friday before.
