Damp, mould and packed boxes: getting a Parkville home ready to hand back

The Better Health Channel lists carpet, curtains, plasterboard and even paper, cardboard, books and boxes among the materials it can live on, and it only grows where a surface is damp or the air is humid. Worth keeping in mind if packed boxes will sit against a wall for a while.

Among the causes it names are cupboards, corners and furniture pushed against uninsulated outside walls, where air doesn’t circulate. Its suggestions include moving furniture away from the walls, and opening a door or window, which it calls the cheapest and easiest way to reduce moisture. If you use an evaporative cooler, follow the manufacturer’s instructions, because these coolers add moisture to indoor air.

Renting? Victoria’s rental minimum standards require all rooms to be free from mould and damp caused by or related to the building structure. Better Health adds that the owner should fix mould caused by faults such as gutters, while the tenant should use the extractor fans and air the home regularly.

Our end of lease checklist covers bathroom mould removal (ceiling mould isn’t included) and the outside of the exhaust fan. You pack the boxes; we’ll take care of the shower screen.

Moving boxes, mattresses and bedding: what Parkville's two councils suggest

Parkville is split between the City of Melbourne and Merri-bek City Council, so check which council collects from your street first (see bins, bulky waste and tips in Parkville). Their recycling guides treat the usual move-out leftovers a little differently.

  • Cardboard boxes: the City of Melbourne’s A–Z guide says the yellow-lid recycling bin, or a free drop-off at the Dynon Road Waste and Recycling Centre with proof of address. Merri-bek’s recycling A to Z guide lists the mixed recycling bin, a bundled cardboard collection with a booked hard waste collection, or a resource recovery centre. Waxed cardboard boxes go in the general rubbish bin.
  • Mattresses: the City of Melbourne suggests donating or selling one in good condition, or dropping it at Dynon Road, where charges may apply. Merri-bek lists hard waste and Soft Landing among its options.
  • Sheets, blankets and bedding: the City of Melbourne says blankets and bedding can’t be recycled and go in the red-lid general waste bin. Merri-bek suggests donating manchester to charity, but notes that pillow fillings and feather doonas aren’t accepted.

We also clean in Carlton, North Melbourne, Brunswick and Kensington; see every area on our Melbourne cleaning services page.

Bins, bulky waste and tips in Parkville

Useful if you are moving in or out. Collection days, hard waste rules and tip fees are set by the council or government service responsible for your address, so use their official links below.

Parkville is split between City of Melbourne and Merri-bek City Council. To find out which council collects from your street, use each council’s bin collection lookup below or the Victorian Government’s Know Your Council search, then follow that council’s details.

City of Melbourne

The City of Melbourne runs household bins, hard waste collections and the Dynon Road Waste and Recycling Centre.

  • Council (general enquiries and bins, 7.30 am to 6 pm weekdays) 03 9658 9658

Check your bin collection day Find your collection days on the council’s collection map and area calendars.

Households with council bins have a red-lid general waste bin (weekly), a yellow-lid recycling bin (fortnightly) and a lime-green-lid food and garden organics (FOGO) bin (weekly).

Most residents live in apartments, where bins may be in a bin room or use chutes: ask your building manager or owners corporation where the bins are and when they are collected.

Hard waste collection

  • Who and how much: one free collection of 1 cubic metre (1 m × 1 m × 1 m) per residential address each financial year. Commercial and retail addresses are not eligible.
  • Limits: no item over 30 kg; timber under 1 m (at most 10 pieces); rugs no more than 1.5 m.
  • Not collected: branches, building and renovation waste (including toilets and carpet), fencing, liquids, chemicals and paint, household rubbish and recycling, polystyrene, bricks and soil, asbestos and other hazardous waste, tyres and broken glass. Full list.
  • Booking notice: bookings are essential, and collection dates are released two months in advance. Put items out the day before.
  • High-rise buildings: ask your building manager to book a collection for you.
  • Book: online booking.

Tips, transfer stations and drop-off

  • Dynon Road Waste and Recycling Centre (transfer station), 437 Dynon Road, West Melbourne. Hours: for residents, 9 am to 3 pm, seven days. Planning a move-out

Hard waste dates are released two months ahead and must be booked, so check dates as soon as you know when you are moving. Have items collected before your end of lease clean and key handover. If the collection would be too late, take items to the Dynon Road centre (fees apply to household waste) or arrange a rubbish removal service.

Merri-bek City Council

Developments of four or more homes share some bins.

In multi-unit developments with council bins, each unit can book its own hard waste collection.

Moving day in Parkville: parking, skips and unwanted furniture

Parkville is split between the City of Melbourne and Merri-bek City Council. Check which council collects your bins, then follow that council’s rules below.

  • City of Melbourne: The City of Melbourne’s reserved parking permits cover removalists when off-street parking isn’t suitable. Apply at least five clear business days ahead; residents get 50% off for a removalist outside their own home.
  • City of Melbourne: A skip on a public road needs a skip permit, which the skip company applies for. Reserved parking permits don’t cover skips.
  • City of Melbourne: The City asks residents to donate, give away or sell hard-waste items in good condition before booking a collection.
  • Merri-bek City Council: In streets with timed parking, removalists can use a Merri-bek service permit to park all day (up to 4 weeks). You can apply, or the removalist can with your written consent; attach proof of address and the removalist’s quote. It doesn’t allow parking in clearways, no-stopping or loading zones.
  • Merri-bek City Council: Skips need a permit arranged by an accredited hire company (7 days’ notice before each placement) and aren’t allowed on footpaths or nature strips. Shipping containers can’t be stored on roads or public land.
  • Merri-bek City Council: Council’s “Donate your goods” advice names the Brotherhood of St Laurence and St Vincent de Paul furniture collections, and reminds you not to leave donations outside closed charity shops.

In Victoria, it’s illegal to put e-waste in household rubbish, so take old electronics to an e-waste drop-off.
