Condensation, soft water and pollen: a Port Melbourne cleaning guide

Keeping condensation and mould in check

The Better Health Channel lists condensation from cooking, showering and drying clothes among the common causes of mould indoors. Its advice: run exhaust fans or open a window while you cook or shower, and wipe condensation off windows and shower glass.

Renting? Consumer Affairs Victoria’s rental minimum standards say every room must be free from mould and damp caused by or related to the building structure.

Soft water from South East Water

South East Water places Port Melbourne in its South Melbourne sampling locality, which also receives some water from the Winneke treatment plant at Sugarloaf Reservoir. Its 2024–25 water quality report recorded average network hardness of 18 mg/L, so streaks on a shower screen are usually soap rather than scale.

Spring pollen

Grass pollen season in Victoria usually runs from 1 October to 31 December, and the Better Health Channel suggests following the Melbourne Pollen Count and Forecast. Vacuuming more often and wiping sills and balcony door tracks may help reduce dust and pollen indoors. The pollen count is out of our hands; the door tracks aren’t.

Bins, bulky waste and tips in Port Melbourne

Useful if you are moving in or out. Collection days, hard waste rules and tip fees are set by the council or government service responsible for your address, so use their official links below.

Port Melbourne is split between City of Port Phillip and City of Melbourne. To find out which council collects from your street, use each council’s bin collection lookup below or the Victorian Government’s Know Your Council search, then follow that council’s details.

City of Port Phillip

The City of Port Phillip runs household bins, booked hard and green waste collections and the Port Phillip Resource Recovery Centre.

  • ASSIST, the council’s contact centre (general enquiries, bins and hard waste, weekdays 8.30 am to 5 pm) 03 9209 6777

Check your bin collection day Check your bin day by address.

Houses have a red-lid general waste bin, a yellow-lid recycling bin and a green-lid food and garden organics (FOGO) bin, each collected weekly.

Apartment residents usually share bins in a bin room or chute. Some buildings have council collection and some a private contract, so check with your building manager or owners corporation.

Hard and green waste collection

  • How much: houses can book up to 4 collections a year; apartment buildings, blocks of flats and groups of units can book up to 6 shared collections a year. The service is part of the annual waste charge. Not every apartment building is eligible.
  • Limits: up to 2 cubic metres of hard waste and 2 of green waste (4 combined, about one standard trailer load); single items under 50 kg and shorter than 1.5 m.
  • Not collected: asbestos, car batteries, chemicals, pesticides and paint, excavation or building materials, household recycling and rubbish, hazardous waste, liquids and soil. Full details.
  • Timing: you choose from the available dates for your area (usually your bin day) and get an email confirmation; items go out no more than 24 hours before. Cancel by calling ASSIST at least two days before.
  • Who books: the owner, body corporate or an authorised representative confirms the booking.
  • Book: online or call ASSIST on 03 9209 6777.

Tips, transfer stations and drop-off

  • Port Phillip Resource Recovery Centre (recycling and some bulky items; not a tip), corner of White and Boundary Streets, South Melbourne (enter via Boundary Street). Hours: Monday to Friday 7.30 am to 3.30 pm; Saturday and Sunday 9 am to 1 pm; closed public holidays. Recycling, garden waste, e-waste, washing machines and dryers, and mattresses ($21 for the first); fees apply to waste going to landfill (for example $34 for a resident’s car boot). No fridges, freezers, air conditioners, asbestos, soil or rubble. Bring ID with a Port Phillip address. Centre details and fees

Planning a move-out

Pick the earliest available collection date for your area that falls before your end of lease clean and key handover. If none suits, take what the Resource Recovery Centre accepts there (fees apply to landfill waste) or arrange a rubbish removal service.

City of Melbourne

The City of Melbourne runs household bins, hard waste collections and the Dynon Road Waste and Recycling Centre.

  • Council (general enquiries and bins, 7.30 am to 6 pm weekdays) 03 9658 9658

Check your bin collection day Find your collection days on the council’s collection map and area calendars.

Households with council bins have a red-lid general waste bin (weekly), a yellow-lid recycling bin (fortnightly) and a lime-green-lid food and garden organics (FOGO) bin (weekly).

Most residents live in apartments, where bins may be in a bin room or use chutes: ask your building manager or owners corporation where the bins are and when they are collected.

Hard waste collection

  • Who and how much: one free collection of 1 cubic metre (1 m × 1 m × 1 m) per residential address each financial year. Commercial and retail addresses are not eligible.
  • Limits: no item over 30 kg; timber under 1 m (at most 10 pieces); rugs no more than 1.5 m.
  • Not collected: branches, building and renovation waste (including toilets and carpet), fencing, liquids, chemicals and paint, household rubbish and recycling, polystyrene, bricks and soil, asbestos and other hazardous waste, tyres and broken glass. Full list.
  • Booking notice: bookings are essential, and collection dates are released two months in advance. Put items out the day before.
  • High-rise buildings: ask your building manager to book a collection for you.
  • Book: online booking.

Tips, transfer stations and drop-off

  • Dynon Road Waste and Recycling Centre (transfer station), 437 Dynon Road, West Melbourne. Hours: for residents, 9 am to 3 pm, seven days. City of Melbourne residents can drop off recycling, green waste and e-waste free with proof of address (rates notice, driver’s licence or utility bill); tipping fees apply to household waste. No paint, building materials, tyres or hazardous waste. Check the page for any temporary changes before you go. Centre details and fees

Planning a move-out

Hard waste dates are released two months ahead and must be booked, so check dates as soon as you know when you are moving. Have items collected before your end of lease clean and key handover. If the collection would be too late, take items to the Dynon Road centre (fees apply to household waste) or arrange a rubbish removal service.

Moving day in Port Melbourne: parking, skips and unwanted furniture

Port Melbourne is split between the City of Port Phillip and the City of Melbourne. Check which council collects your bins, then follow that council’s rules below.

  • City of Port Phillip: Port Phillip issues a free temporary resident relocation permit for up to 3 days. Moving trucks are listed under the moving company’s name, apply at least 5 days ahead, and the permit is only valid outside a fully residential property, not in clearways or loading zones.
  • City of Port Phillip: Skip bins on a road or Council land need a Skip Bin Permit, obtained by a registered skip company.
  • City of Melbourne: The City of Melbourne’s reserved parking permits cover removalists when off-street parking isn’t suitable. Apply at least five clear business days ahead; residents get 50% off for a removalist outside their own home.
  • City of Melbourne: A skip on a public road needs a skip permit, which the skip company applies for. Reserved parking permits don’t cover skips.
  • City of Melbourne: The City asks residents to donate, give away or sell hard-waste items in good condition before booking a collection.

In Victoria, it’s illegal to put e-waste in household rubbish, so take old electronics to an e-waste drop-off.
