Bins, bulky waste and tips in Vermont

Useful if you are moving in or out. Collection days, hard waste rules and tip fees are set by the council or government service responsible for your address, so use their official links below.

Vermont is split between Whitehorse City Council and Maroondah City Council. To find out which council collects from your street, use each council’s bin collection lookup below or the Victorian Government’s Know Your Council search, then follow that council’s details.

Whitehorse City Council

Whitehorse City Council runs household bins, booked hard waste collections and the Whitehorse Recycling and Waste Centre.

  • Council (general enquiries and bins) 03 9262 6333
  • Hard waste bookings (Cleanaway, the council’s contractor) 03 9780 6120

Check your bin collection day Find your bin collection days by address (Whitehorse Maps).

Households have a red-lid garbage bin (weekly; older bins have a dark green lid) and a yellow-lid recycling bin (fortnightly). A bright-green-lid food and garden organics (FOGO) bin is optional, with an annual charge.

Not every apartment or unit development has council bin collection; some have private collections, so check with your property manager or owners corporation.

Hard waste collection

  • Who and how much: residents get 2 free booked collections each financial year; extra collections can be booked for a fee through the council’s contractor. Not available to businesses or commercial properties.
  • Limits: up to 3 cubic metres per collection (1 m × 3 m × 1 m); items two people can lift; at most 2 mattresses or bases, which must be listed when you book.
  • Not collected: household rubbish and recycling, loose garden waste, tyres, paint, gas bottles, batteries, building and renovation waste, fence panels and pallets, and hazardous items such as chemicals and asbestos. Full list.
  • Booking notice: book by 5 pm Wednesday for collection the following week (it may take longer in busy times); collection is any time from 6 am Monday to 6 pm Friday of that week. Changes and cancellations close at 5 pm on the Wednesday before.
  • Apartments: in blocks of 6 or more dwellings, contact the body corporate; some blocks have their own scheduled collections.
  • Book: online with Cleanaway (recommended) or call 03 9780 6120.

Tips, transfer stations and drop-off

  • Whitehorse Recycling and Waste Centre (transfer station), corner of Burwood Highway and Morack Road, Vermont South. Hours: 6.30 am to 4 pm, seven days (no weighed vehicles after 3.45 pm); closed Good Friday, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Takes household waste and bulky items for a fee, and some items free. Free items · Items and fees · Not accepted

Recycling and small-item drop-off only (no household rubbish)

  • Recycling hubs (small items only), Whitehorse Civic Centre, 379–399 Whitehorse Road, Nunawading, and Box Hill Town Hall, 1022 Whitehorse Road, Box Hill. Hours: Civic Centre (Nunawading), Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm; Box Hill Town Hall, Tuesday to Friday 9am to 1pm, closed Monday (council service centre hours, checked 13 Oct 2026). Planning a move-out

Book hard waste by 5 pm on a Wednesday for the following week, earlier in busy times, so it is collected before your end of lease clean and key handover. If that is too late, take items to the Whitehorse Recycling and Waste Centre (fees apply) or arrange a rubbish removal service.

Maroondah City Council

Maroondah City Council runs household bins and booked hard rubbish collections. It does not list a tip of its own; it lists nearby transfer stations run by others.

Check your bin collection day Find your collection schedule by address.

Households have a red-lid general waste bin (weekly), a yellow-lid recycling bin (fortnightly) and a lime-green-lid food and garden organics (FOGO) bin (fortnightly, on alternate weeks).

Hard rubbish and bundled prunings

  • Who and how much: households with a council residential waste service can book, each financial year, two single hard waste collections (2 cubic metres each), or one double (4 cubic metres), or a mix with bundled prunings. Up to two extra paid collections can be booked online.
  • Limits: nothing two people cannot lift; at most 3 mattresses; timber up to 10 pieces no longer than 1.5 m.
  • Not collected: batteries, most items over 1.5 m, garden waste in a hard waste pile, building waste, liquids and chemicals, and power tools or bikes with built-in batteries. A to Z disposal guide.
  • Booking notice: bookings can be made one week ahead; when the coming week is full, you may be able to book the next available week. Items go out the weekend before.
  • Book: online with Cleanaway, by live chat or on 1300 88 22 33.

If that is too late, take items to a transfer station (fees apply) or arrange a rubbish removal service.

Moving day in Vermont: parking, skips and unwanted furniture

Vermont is split between Whitehorse City Council and Maroondah City Council. Check which council collects your bins, then follow that council’s rules below.

  • Whitehorse City Council: Whitehorse’s Service Residential Parking Permit gives short-term exemptions (up to a month) from timed restrictions for residents on restricted streets, with quotes or receipts as evidence; the page doesn’t mention removalists by name.
  • Whitehorse City Council: A skip or shipping container on Council land needs a permit applied for by the contractor, at least 48 business hours ahead.
  • Whitehorse City Council: Council suggests op shops, charity furniture collection and the Eastern Emergency Relief Network for usable furniture and whitegoods, and has a moving-out flyer.
  • Maroondah City Council: Maroondah doesn’t publish a moving-day parking permit.
  • Maroondah City Council: A skip on Council land, including the nature strip and road, needs a permit applied for by an accredited bin hire company before it’s placed.
  • Maroondah City Council: Council’s “Pre-loved Gems” guide lists local op shops and how to donate.

In Victoria, it’s illegal to put e-waste in household rubbish, so take old electronics to an e-waste drop-off.

Renting in Vermont

At the 2021 Census, 79.8% of occupied homes in Vermont were separate houses, 19.8% semi-detached, terrace or townhouses and 0.4% flats or apartments; 18.6% were rented.

Most homes here are separate houses, so if your lease includes a garage, shed or garden, check the condition report for what’s expected and clear any outdoor rubbish before the clean. When you know your moving and inspection dates, see end of lease cleaning in Vermont and our guide to moving out and getting your bond back.
