Leaving a Vermont house or townhouse: what to plan for the clean
Vermont is mostly a suburb of houses. At the ABS 2021 Census, 3,031 of its 3,800 occupied private dwellings (79.8%) were separate houses and 753 (19.8%) were semi-detached, row or terrace houses or townhouses: 549 of those had one storey and 203 had two or more. Only 16 dwellings (0.4%) were flats or apartments. 706 homes (18.6%) were rented, and 545 of those were rented through a real estate agent.
Moving out of a separate house
- The garage is part of the standard clean: we sweep it and remove cobwebs. Sheds, gardens and outdoor areas are not on the checklist, so read your lease and condition report for what you’re expected to leave tidy outside.
- Window tracks are cleaned on the inside. Split-system air conditioners get a wipe and a filter clean; ducted systems are not included.
- Clear the rooms before the cleaners start. Boxes, furniture and rubbish left behind slow the clean and hide the floors and skirting boards the agent will check.
Townhouses and units in a shared complex
- If your complex has an owners corporation, check its rules for moving trucks, visitor parking and shared bin areas before moving day. Each complex sets its own rules.
- Tell us how the cleaners will get in (a code, a lockbox or meeting someone at the door), and make sure power and water are still connected on the day. We can’t clean without them.
- In the booking form, enter the number of bedrooms and bathrooms. That sets the estimated hours, whether the townhouse has one storey or two.

Hard rubbish before a Vermont end of lease clean: which council collects it
Whitehorse City Council lists Vermont as a suburb it shares with the City of Maroondah, so check which council collects your bins before you book a hard waste pickup. The rules differ.
Whitehorse addresses
- Whitehorse hard waste: residents can book 2 free collections each financial year. Book by 5pm Wednesday for collection the following week.
- Put items on the nature strip the weekend before your collection week, not earlier, and no more than three cubic metres. Household rubbish and general garden waste go in your bins, not the hard waste pile.
- Some buildings and body corporates already have a regular hard waste collection, so ask your building manager before booking your own.
Maroondah addresses
- Maroondah hard rubbish: households with a residential waste service can book two single collections each financial year, or one double collection. A single collection is 2 cubic metres.
- Bookings can be made one week in advance, but in busy periods you may get the next available week, and booked collections can’t be changed or cancelled. Book early if your lease end date is fixed.
Taking it to the tip yourself
The Whitehorse Recycling and Waste Centre is on the corner of Burwood Highway and Morack Road, Vermont South. It is open seven days, 6.30am to 4pm, with no booking needed (closed Good Friday, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day). Cardboard, electronic waste, steel whitegoods and up to 100 litres of paint are accepted free. Furniture, hard rubbish and mattresses are charged.

Before your final inspection
In Victoria, renters must leave the property reasonably clean, with fair wear and tear excepted, and the condition report from the start of the agreement is the reference. Since 29 March 2021 a rental provider can only require professional cleaning at the end of the tenancy if the property was professionally cleaned immediately before you moved in and you were told, or if it is needed to return the property to its condition at the start, allowing for fair wear and tear.
