Sunshine's soft tap water: what it means for showers, sinks and the laundry
The Victorian Department of Health’s list of water suppliers puts Sunshine in the Maribyrnong water sampling area, the same one as Braybrook, Footscray and Tottenham. Note that Sunshine West sits in a different area (Altona).
Greater Western Water’s 2024–25 Drinking Water Quality Report measured hardness in that area at an average of 24 mg/L, against a guideline value of 200 mg/L, and the yearly averages it lists since 2020–21 have stayed between 18 and 24 mg/L.
Less scale, more soap film
With water that soft, heavy white limescale is rarely what’s dulling a Sunshine bathroom. The usual culprit is soap and shampoo residue on the shower glass, taps and grout, plus detergent build-up in the laundry tub. A smaller squirt of product and a quick rinse and squeegee after each shower keep it in check, and a mild cleaner usually shifts it without harsh descalers.
