Clearing out a Sunshine rental: hard rubbish, tip drop-offs and leftovers
An empty home is quicker to clean and easier to inspect, so sort the leftovers before the cleaners arrive. Brimbank City Council gives every residential property that receives a council waste service one free hard rubbish and green waste collection each financial year (1 July to 30 June). One collection takes up to 4 cubic metres of hard rubbish and 2 cubic metres of bundled green waste, and if you want both you must book them at the same time.
Plan it around moving week. Items go out on the Sunday before your collection week, no more than 2 metres inside the front boundary, with clear access and nothing stacked against fences or hedges. Changes or cancellations close at 5pm on the Thursday before your collection week. Renting? Ask your agent or rental provider whether this year’s free collection for the property has already been used.
What Brimbank's hard rubbish collection won't take
- Household general rubbish and household recyclables (those stay in your kerbside bins)
- Building or renovation materials, timber and fence panels
- Single items heavier than 30 kg (household appliances aside) or longer than 1.5 m
- Paint, chemicals, asbestos and other hazardous waste
- Clothes and shoes
Old carpet or underlay can go out with hard rubbish if it is rolled to 1.5 m, two people can lift it to chest height, and there are no more than three rolls. Clothing, shoes, batteries, small appliances and electronics can instead go to the Brimbank Resource Recovery Centre on Stadium Drive, Keilor Park, free for Brimbank residents in household quantities (one car boot per visit, no trailers). It does not take carpet, white goods or general household waste. Anything with a plug, battery or power cord must stay out of your rubbish bin: it has been illegal to put e-waste in household rubbish or landfill in Victoria since 2019.

Houses, townhouses and high-rise units: preparing a Sunshine home for the final inspection
Sunshine is mostly houses, but not only houses. In the ABS 2021 Census (Sunshine (Vic.)), 69.2% of the 3,365 occupied private dwellings were separate houses, 22.1% were semi-detached, row or terrace houses and townhouses, and 8.3% were flats or apartments. Of those 279 flats and apartments, 91 were in blocks of nine or more storeys. 40.4% of occupied homes were rented, and 973 of the 1,361 rented homes were rented through a real estate agent.
What that means for your move-out:
- Houses with a garage: garage sweeping and cobweb removal are part of the standard checklist. Outdoor areas are not listed, so check your condition report for yards, paths or carports and plan those yourself.
- Units in a tall block: book the lift, and the loading bay if there is one, with your building manager or owners corporation, and tell us about parking and access when you book so the cleaners can get in.

Leaving a Sunshine rental with a pet
Consumer Affairs Victoria explains that renters, pet owners included, must keep the property reasonably clean and avoid damage. Rental providers cannot ask for an extra “pet bond”, and when VCAT decides a claim about pet damage it considers fair wear and tear and the age and condition of the item. In apartments and units, owners corporation rules about pets in common areas also apply.

Before your final inspection
In Victoria, renters must leave the property reasonably clean, with fair wear and tear excepted, and the condition report from the start of the agreement is the reference. Since 29 March 2021 a rental provider can only require professional cleaning at the end of the tenancy if the property was professionally cleaned immediately before you moved in and you were told, or if it is needed to return the property to its condition at the start, allowing for fair wear and tear.
