Bins, bulky waste and tips in Burwood

Useful if you are moving in or out. Collection days, hard waste rules and tip fees are set by the council or government service responsible for your address, so use their official links below.

Burwood is split between Whitehorse City Council and the City of Monash. To find out which council collects from your street, use each council’s bin collection lookup below or the Victorian Government’s Know Your Council search, then follow that council’s details.

Whitehorse City Council

Whitehorse City Council runs household bins, booked hard waste collections and the Whitehorse Recycling and Waste Centre.

  • Council (general enquiries and bins) 03 9262 6333
  • Hard waste bookings (Cleanaway, the council’s contractor) 03 9780 6120

Check your bin collection day Find your bin collection days by address (Whitehorse Maps).

Households have a red-lid garbage bin (weekly; older bins have a dark green lid) and a yellow-lid recycling bin (fortnightly). A bright-green-lid food and garden organics (FOGO) bin is optional, with an annual charge.

Not every apartment or unit development has council bin collection; some have private collections, so check with your property manager or owners corporation.

Hard waste collection

  • Who and how much: residents get 2 free booked collections each financial year; extra collections can be booked for a fee through the council’s contractor. Not available to businesses or commercial properties.
  • Limits: up to 3 cubic metres per collection (1 m × 3 m × 1 m); items two people can lift; at most 2 mattresses or bases, which must be listed when you book.
  • Not collected: household rubbish and recycling, loose garden waste, tyres, paint, gas bottles, batteries, building and renovation waste, fence panels and pallets, and hazardous items such as chemicals and asbestos. Full list.
  • Booking notice: book by 5 pm Wednesday for collection the following week (it may take longer in busy times); collection is any time from 6 am Monday to 6 pm Friday of that week. Changes and cancellations close at 5 pm on the Wednesday before.
  • Apartments: in blocks of 6 or more dwellings, contact the body corporate; some blocks have their own scheduled collections.
  • Book: online with Cleanaway (recommended) or call 03 9780 6120.

Planning a move-out

City of Monash

The City of Monash runs household bins, hard waste collections and the Monash Recycling and Waste Centre.

Check your bin collection day Find when your bins are collected by address.

Households have a red-lid landfill bin and a yellow-lid recycling bin (each fortnightly) and a green-lid food and garden waste bin (weekly).

Residents of apartments and other multi-unit buildings may not be eligible for council hard waste collections: check with your building manager or body corporate first.

Hard waste collection

  • Yearly collection: one free scheduled collection a year for eligible residential properties; the 2026 round ran from 13 July to 4 September. The council has decided to move to two booked collections a year from 2027; check its page for the new rules.
  • Extra collection: $216 ($183 for pensioners), up to 2 cubic metres, collected on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Book and pay before 4 pm Monday for collection that week.
  • Not collected: liquids, paint, oil and chemicals, batteries and vapes, gas bottles, cement sheeting, plaster and asbestos, building materials, concrete, bricks and soil, polystyrene, recyclables and household rubbish. Hard waste details.
  • Book an extra collection: online or call 03 9518 3555.

  • Monash Recycling and Waste Centre (transfer station), 380 Ferntree Gully Road, Notting Hill. Hours: 7.30 am to 3 pm, seven days. Open to everyone; fees apply. Monash residents and ratepayers get some recycling free and discounted rates with proof of address (driver licence, rates notice or utility bill). Accepted items and fees

Planning a move-out

Outside the yearly round, an extra collection booked and paid before 4 pm Monday is collected that Wednesday or Thursday, so book it for the week before your end of lease clean and key handover. Otherwise take items to the Monash Recycling and Waste Centre (fees apply) or arrange a rubbish removal service.

Moving day in Burwood: parking, skips and unwanted furniture

Burwood is split between Whitehorse City Council and the City of Monash. Check which council collects your bins, then follow that council’s rules below.

  • Whitehorse City Council: Whitehorse’s Service Residential Parking Permit gives short-term exemptions (up to a month) from timed restrictions for residents on restricted streets, with quotes or receipts as evidence; the page doesn’t mention removalists by name.
  • Whitehorse City Council: A skip or shipping container on Council land needs a permit applied for by the contractor, at least 48 business hours ahead.
  • Whitehorse City Council: Council suggests op shops, charity furniture collection and the Eastern Emergency Relief Network for usable furniture and whitegoods, and has a moving-out flyer.
  • City of Monash: Monash doesn’t publish a moving-day parking permit. Occupying a road, laneway, footpath or nature strip uses its Occupy Roadway Permit.
  • City of Monash: Skips on Council land need a permit from an accredited supplier, with 2 days’ notice; they’re not allowed on arterial roads, and none is needed on private property.
  • City of Monash: Council suggests donating good furniture to charity and lists op shops in Monash.

In Victoria, it’s illegal to put e-waste in household rubbish, so take old electronics to an e-waste drop-off.
