Hard rubbish and the tip before your St Albans move-out
Brimbank City Council runs hard rubbish collection in St Albans. Each residential property with a council waste service gets one free hard rubbish or green waste collection per financial year (1 July to 30 June), covering up to 4 cubic metres of hard rubbish and up to 2 cubic metres of bundled green waste. To get both in the free collection, book them at the same time.
- Put items out on the Sunday before your collection week, 2 metres inside the front boundary and not stacked against fences or hedges. Time the booking so the pile has gone before your clean and final inspection.
- Household furniture, whitegoods (fridge doors removed), one mattress, small electrical items and up to four car tyres are accepted. Building materials, paint, chemicals, timber and clothing are not, and items must be under 30 kg (appliances excepted) and no longer than 1.5 m.
- Plans changed? The council says to cancel or change a booking before 5pm on the Thursday before your collection week.

For a car-boot load, the council’s Resource Recovery Centre on Stadium Drive, Keilor Park takes free drop-offs from Brimbank residents in household quantities only: one car boot per visit, no trailers or commercial vehicles. It opens 9am to 4pm on weekdays and 9am to 1pm on Saturdays. Check the accepted-items list on its page before you load up.

St Albans water, shower screens and pink grout stains
Greater Western Water (GWW) supplies Melbourne’s inner-west and north-west suburbs. St Albans isn’t one of the sampling areas in GWW’s Drinking Water Quality Report 2024–25, but nearby areas on the same Melbourne system recorded average hardness of 23 mg/L (Caroline Springs and Strathmore) and 25 mg/L (Altona), far below the 200 mg/L guideline value.

On its water quality page, GWW explains that pink staining on shower tiles, grout, sinks and toilet bowls comes from airborne microbes that grow on damp surfaces, not from the water supply, and that it can come back within weeks. Its advice: keep surfaces clean and dry, improve ventilation and use chlorine-based or disinfectant cleaners. In your last weeks at the property, run the exhaust fan and leave the bathroom door open so the marks don’t return before the inspection.

- Kitchen: sink, benchtops, cupboards inside and out, stove, range hood and filters, and the dishwasher exterior.

Planning your end of lease clean in St Albans

In Victoria, renters must leave the property reasonably clean, with fair wear and tear excepted, and the condition report from the start of the agreement is the reference.
