Carpet cleaning at the end of a lease
If you are moving out, check what your tenancy agreement and condition report say about the carpets. In Victoria, renters must leave the property reasonably clean, with fair wear and tear excepted, and the condition report from the start of the agreement is the reference. Since 29 March 2021 a rental provider can only require professional cleaning at the end of the tenancy if the property was professionally cleaned immediately before you moved in and you were told, or if it is needed to return the property to its condition at the start, allowing for fair wear and tear. Carpet steam cleaning can be added to an end of lease clean in Preston in the same booking. Moving out? See moving out and claiming your rental bond.

How we clean carpets
Our carpet cleaning is a steam clean (hot water extraction):
- Heavily marked areas are pre-treated to loosen dirt and spots.
- Hot water and cleaning solution are worked through the carpet fibres and extracted with the machine, taking the loosened dirt with them.
- As much water as possible is extracted, so the carpet is left damp rather than wet.
Keep the room ventilated afterwards and avoid walking on the damp carpet in outdoor shoes. How long it takes to dry depends on the carpet, the weather and airflow.

Stains, odours and what to expect
Steam cleaning lifts everyday soiling and many spots, but results depend on what caused a stain, how long it has been there and what has already been used on it. Some marks, such as dyes, bleach spots or old pet urine, may only fade or may not come out at all, and wear in high-traffic paths is not dirt. Tell us about stains, pets and recent spills in the booking form’s instructions field so we know what to expect.
If something spills before we arrive
- Act quickly: scoop up solids and blot liquids with a clean white cloth or paper towel.
- Blot, don’t rub, and work from the outside of the spot towards the middle so it does not spread.
- Use only a little water and avoid soaking the carpet; over-wetting can spread a stain into the backing.
- Before using any product, check the carpet’s care guide and the product label, and test on a hidden spot.
Looking after carpet between cleans
Regular vacuuming, especially in hallways and other high-traffic areas, removes grit before it wears the fibres, and doormats at entrances keep a lot of it out. Your carpet manufacturer’s care guide is the best reference for products and cleaning methods for your carpet type.
Getting rid of old carpet in Preston: Darebin hard waste and the tip
Replacing worn carpet in one room and cleaning the rest? Darebin City Council gives eligible residential properties one free booked hard waste collection of up to 2 cubic metres each financial year, and carpet is on the list of what it collects (up to three rolls). Book by phone or online through the council’s hard waste collections page.
- Book early: Darebin warns a collection date could be 4 weeks after you book.
- Size it right: items need to be under 1.5 metres long and liftable by two people, and nothing over 30 kg is collected, so roll old carpet into short, light pieces.
- Missed the free pickup? The Darebin Resource Recovery Centre at 30 Kurnai Avenue, Reservoir, takes domestic quantities, with charges for general waste. Check with the council what it will take before you load the car.
Clear the old carpet out before your clean so the cleaner can reach every edge of the rooms you are keeping. The Preston area page has more on Darebin’s waste services.
Houses, townhouses and apartments in Preston: getting carpets ready
Preston has a real mix of homes. In the ABS 2021 Census for Preston (Vic.), about 56% of occupied private dwellings were separate houses, 25% were semi-detached, row or terrace houses and townhouses, and 18% were flats or apartments. Around 40% of occupied homes were rented. Here is how that shapes a carpet clean:
- Two-storey townhouses: almost 1,500 Preston townhouses and terraces had two or more storeys. If yours has carpeted stairs or a landing, mention them in the booking instructions so we can confirm them with you.
- Apartments: more than 1,700 Preston apartments were in blocks of four storeys or more. Check whether your building needs a lift booking, and tell us where a cleaner can park and unload; building and strata rules vary.
- Rentals: moving out of a rented house or unit? Book the carpet clean for after the furniture has gone, so every room can be done edge to edge.
Whatever the home, clear small items and anything fragile off the floor first; our cleaners move light furniture only. The carpet gets the deep clean; you get the bragging rights.
Live on a street with timed parking? Darebin residents within 100 metres of timed or permit zones can buy a weekly service permit so a tradesperson working at the property can park; see Darebin’s residential parking permits page.

Carpet cleaning in Preston: questions
Is carpet steam cleaning in Preston the same as hot water extraction?
Yes. Our steam clean is hot water extraction: marked areas are pre-treated, hot water and cleaning solution are worked through the fibres, and the machine extracts as much water as possible so the carpet is left damp rather than wet.
How do I get rid of old carpet in Preston?
Darebin City Council collects carpet (up to three rolls) as part of its booked hard waste service, with one free collection of up to 2 cubic metres per financial year for eligible residential properties. Book through the council, or see the Preston area page.
How is carpet cleaning priced?
From $98.60. $98.60 for the first room and $68.44 for each additional room. Final pricing is shown during booking. A standard room is approximately 3 × 3 metres to 3 × 3.5 metres; larger spaces need to be confirmed with us.
Do you clean rugs, couches or upholstery?
Our Preston carpet service is for fitted carpet. For rugs, couches or other upholstery, call 1300 280 576 before booking to check what we can do.
Will you move furniture?
Our carpet cleaners can help move light furniture. They do not move heavy or bulky furniture and do not provide a removalist service, so please clear small items and anything fragile from the floor.
Can you remove every stain?
Not always. Many spots lift with steam cleaning, but some stains (for example dyes, bleach or old pet urine) may only fade. Tell us about them when you book.
Do I need my carpets cleaned when I move out?
Not always. In Victoria, a rental provider can only require professional cleaning at the end of a tenancy in limited cases (Residential Tenancies Regulations 2021 (Vic), reg 12). Check your lease and condition report. If you need it, carpet steam cleaning can be added to an end of lease clean in the same booking.
Do I need to be home?
Not necessarily. Power and water must be connected, and we coordinate access with you when you book.
