- Tell us about stains, pets or recent spills in the booking form’s instructions field.
Carpet cleaning at the end of a lease
If you are moving out, check what your tenancy agreement and condition report say about the carpets. In Victoria, renters must leave the property reasonably clean, with fair wear and tear excepted, and the condition report from the start of the agreement is the reference. Since 29 March 2021 a rental provider can only require professional cleaning at the end of the tenancy if the property was professionally cleaned immediately before you moved in and you were told, or if it is needed to return the property to its condition at the start, allowing for fair wear and tear. Carpet steam cleaning can be added to an end of lease clean in Cheltenham in the same booking. Moving out? See moving out and claiming your rental bond.

How we clean carpets
Our carpet cleaning is a steam clean (hot water extraction):
- Heavily marked areas are pre-treated to loosen dirt and spots.
- Hot water and cleaning solution are worked through the carpet fibres and extracted with the machine, taking the loosened dirt with them.
- As much water as possible is extracted, so the carpet is left damp rather than wet.
Keep the room ventilated afterwards and avoid walking on the damp carpet in outdoor shoes. How long it takes to dry depends on the carpet, the weather and airflow.

Stains, odours and what to expect
Steam cleaning lifts everyday soiling and many spots, but results depend on what caused a stain, how long it has been there and what has already been used on it. Some marks, such as dyes, bleach spots or old pet urine, may only fade or may not come out at all, and wear in high-traffic paths is not dirt. Tell us about stains, pets and recent spills in the booking form’s instructions field so we know what to expect.
If something spills before we arrive
- Act quickly: scoop up solids and blot liquids with a clean white cloth or paper towel.
- Blot, don’t rub, and work from the outside of the spot towards the middle so it does not spread.
- Use only a little water and avoid soaking the carpet; over-wetting can spread a stain into the backing.
- Before using any product, check the carpet’s care guide and the product label, and test on a hidden spot.
Looking after carpet between cleans
Regular vacuuming, especially in hallways and other high-traffic areas, removes grit before it wears the fibres, and doormats at entrances keep a lot of it out. Your carpet manufacturer’s care guide is the best reference for products and cleaning methods for your carpet type.
Getting rid of old carpet in Cheltenham: Kingston and Bayside hard waste
Cheltenham is shared by two councils: the City of Kingston lists it among its suburbs, and the Victorian Government lists it among Bayside City Council’s localities. Your rates notice shows which council collects from your address, and the two councils treat old carpet differently.
City of Kingston addresses
- Households with Kingston kerbside bins get two free on-call hard waste collections per financial year, used separately or together as a double collection.
- Carpet or rug is taken if it is rolled up and no longer than 1.5 metres: one roll of carpet or rug and one roll of underlay per booking.
- Book through the Kingston hard waste page; bookings close at 3pm on the business day before your bin day.
Bayside City Council addresses
- Bayside households get two free collections per calendar year, booked at least six weeks apart through the council’s Customer Portal, with items already on the nature strip.
- Carpet must be rolled and tied, no longer than 2 metres, and no more than 1 cubic metre in total.
- The Waste and Recycling Centre at 144 Talinga Road, Cheltenham is run by Future Recycling. Details are on the Bayside hard waste page.
Pulling up carpet in one room and keeping it in the hallway or bedrooms? Book the steam clean for the rooms that stay, so new and old floors are not judged side by side with a season’s grit still in the old pile. The Cheltenham area page has the rest of the local waste information, and you can also book carpet cleaning in Moorabbin, carpet cleaning in Beaumaris or carpet cleaning in Mordialloc.
Renting in Cheltenham with a pet: looking after the carpet
In Victoria a renter asks for consent with a separate pet request form for each animal. The rental provider has 14 days to decide, needs a good reason to refuse, and must apply to VCAT for an order to refuse permission. Any conditions you agree on should be put in writing, so check whether yours mention carpet.
Renters must keep the property clean and avoid damage, and that can include damage caused by a pet. When VCAT decides a pet-damage dispute, it considers fair wear and tear and the age and condition of the item. Consumer Affairs Victoria explains the rules in full; this is a summary, not legal advice.
Before the clean, vacuum slowly along skirting boards and under beds where pet hair collects, and note any accident spots in the booking form’s instructions field. Fresh marks usually respond better than ones that have soaked into the underlay over months.
Did you know? Cheltenham takes its name from the Cheltenham Inn, which Charles Whorral named after his English birthplace. By 1856 the inn’s name had replaced the area’s earlier title, Two Acre Village.
