Hard rubbish and tip runs before a Canterbury move-out
Canterbury is in the City of Boroondara. Clearing unwanted furniture and boxes before the clean matters, because our cleaners need empty rooms, cupboards and garage floors to reach everything on the checklist.
- Book hard rubbish early. Boroondara gives eligible residential properties (where the council collects the bins) two free hard rubbish collections each financial year, and warns there may be a few weeks between booking and collection. Details are on the council’s hard waste page.
- Put the pile out on time. Items go on the nature strip no earlier than 2 days before the collection and before 5 am on the day, and the pile can’t be bigger than 2 m³.
- Know what’s refused. Building or renovation materials, paint and chemicals, tyres and batteries aren’t taken in hard waste.
- Living in a larger block? For blocks of 15 or more units, Boroondara says the body corporate makes the booking, so ask your building manager or agent.
If something can’t wait for a collection, the Boroondara Recycling and Waste Centre (also known as Riversdale Depot) at 648 Riversdale Road, Camberwell takes recyclables, expanded polystyrene, some household detox items and small-to-medium e-waste free of charge. Mattresses, tyres, large e-waste, fridge-type whitegoods, green waste and general waste attract a fee. Some free drop-offs need photo ID showing a Boroondara address, and opening hours are shorter on weekdays than on Saturday, so check the page before loading the car.

Canterbury houses, townhouses and flats: what to plan for
According to the ABS 2021 Census, Canterbury (Vic.) had 2,793 occupied private dwellings: 1,802 separate houses (64.5%), 651 semi-detached, terrace or townhouses (23.3%) and 309 flats or apartments (11.1%). Of those homes, 534 (19.1%) were rented, 394 of them through a real estate agent.
Moving out of a house or townhouse
The census counted 473 of the 651 townhouse-type homes as one storey. Whatever the layout, our checklist includes sweeping the garage and removing cobwebs, but outdoor areas aren’t on it, so compare your condition report for courtyards or external windows and add external windows as an extra if needed. Leadlight glass, high ceilings or ornate cornices are worth a note in the booking form’s instructions field.
If your street is in a residential parking permit area, Boroondara issues tradesperson parking permits for established properties and asks for 10 working days to process them (see tradesperson parking permits). Check early what your removalist or other contractors need.
Moving out of a flat or apartment
Of the 309 flats, the census put 149 in three-storey blocks and 62 in blocks of four to eight storeys. In any block, ask the building manager or owners corporation about lift bookings, loading areas and visitor parking before moving day, and add access instructions when you book so the clean starts without delay.

What’s included in an end of lease clean
Every end of lease clean follows our checklist, and your cleaners bring the products and equipment. In short:
- Kitchen: sink, benchtops, cupboards inside and out, stove, range hood and filters, and the dishwasher exterior.
- Oven: oven and grill cleaned inside, including the glass, grease and grime removed, and the front wiped down.
- Bathrooms: shower, bath, tiles and screens, vanity and cabinets inside and out, toilet, mirrors, exhaust fan (exterior), mould removal (not ceiling mould) and floors.
- Bedrooms and living areas: vacuuming and mopping, wardrobes, skirting boards, light switches and power points, wall marks, cobwebs (inside), ceiling fans, split-system air conditioners wiped with the filter cleaned, and window tracks (inside).
- Laundry: benchtops, sink and taps, floor and light fittings.
- Garage: swept and cobwebs removed.
- Extras you can add: balcony, blinds, carpet steam cleaning, fridge, floor tile grout, garage clean-up and wall washing. Add them when you book.

Planning your end of lease clean in Canterbury
A few things make the clean and the final inspection go more smoothly:
- Book the clean for after the furniture is out. Cleaners need empty rooms to reach skirting boards, floors and the insides of wardrobes, so the best time is once the removalists have gone and before you return the keys.
- Leave a little time before the inspection. If your agent or rental provider notices something, it is easier to fix while you still have access to the property.
- Keep the power and water on. Both must be connected on the day of the clean, so check the dates before you arrange disconnection.
- Take dated photos. Photos after the clean, alongside your condition report from the start of the tenancy, are useful evidence if anything is questioned later.

Before your final inspection
In Victoria, renters must leave the property reasonably clean, with fair wear and tear excepted, and the condition report from the start of the agreement is the reference. Since 29 March 2021 a rental provider can only require professional cleaning at the end of the tenancy if the property was professionally cleaned immediately before you moved in and you were told, or if it is needed to return the property to its condition at the start, allowing for fair wear and tear.
